Who’s Side Are You On? Solving Algebra Equations with Variables on Both Sides
How do I solve this problem? 6x – 8 = 4x + 2 Let’s Check the Rules
RULES # 1 – Variables (letters) on the left #2 – Constants (numbers) on the right
ALWAYS FOLLOW THE RULES IF IT’S ON THE WRONG SIDE CHANGE THE SIGN PUT IT ON BOTH SIDES THEN BRING IT ALL DOWN
LEFT SIDE FIRST 6x – 8 = 4x x =-4x 2x – 8 = 2
RIGHT SIDE NEXT 2x – 8 = 2 2x = = +8
WHEN EVERYONE IS ON THE RIGHT SIDE LEAVE IT ALONE OR JUST DIVIDE!
SOLVE THE EQUATION 2x = 10 ÷2 = ÷ 2 x = 5
NOW YOU TRY
HERE’S YOUR PROBLEM 10y – 1 = 3y + 20 LET’S REVIEW THE RULES
RULES # 1 – Variables (letters) on the left #2 – Constants (numbers) on the right
LEFT SIDE 10y – 1 = 3y y =-3y 7y – 1 = 20
RIGHT SIDE 7y = = +1 7y – 1 = 20
DIVIDE y = 3 ÷7 = ÷7 7y = 21
THE END GREAT JOB!
