Fact Family– A group of facts that are a family and share the same numbers Fact Families for addition and subtraction. The 6, 3, 9 Family 6+3=9 3+6=9 9-6=3 9-3=6

Relationship The situation or fact of being related; connected or associated.

Model An example that stands for an idea.

How Much? How Many? Asking for an amount or quantity If Sally fed each bird 2 slices of bread. How many slices of bread did she feed all of the birds?

Addition Add Joining or combining together

Count On Begin with the largest number and count on up until you have used up all of the smaller number.

Doubles These are "easy" to learn because the number is just doubled = = = = 8

Sum The total or whole amount when 2 numbers are combined = 10 sum

Join Put Together Combining two or more numbers. The man walked two barking dogs and two quiet dogs. How many dogs did he walk in all?

Plus Plus Sign Plus: to increase by the adding two numbers = 7 Plus sign: Used to show addition.

Total In All Altogether The whole amount, The whole amount of two numbers added together 2 adults and 3 children went rollerblading. The total number of people rollerblading was 5.

Equal two things with the same value or amount The pickup truck and the car have an equal number of wheels.

An equation or a comparison equation comparison

Plus Zero Zero added to any number will always equal that number. If you have 5 pieces of gum, and I don't give you any more, how many pieces of gum do you have?"

Plus One Plus One facts are just adding one more Two friends were having lunch 1 friend joined them. How many friends ate lunch together?

Plus Two Plus Two facts are just two more than the number being added to two. Five apples are in the basket. Two apples are outside of the basket. How many apples are there in all?

Doubles Plus One For “neighboring” numbers, double the smaller number and add one = = 5 6

Doubles Plus Two For two numbers that are two apart, double the smaller number and add two = = 5 7

Ten Facts Numbers when added together equal ten. 1+9=10 6+4=10 2+8=10 7+3=10 3+7=10 8+2=10 4+6=10 9+1=10 5+5=10 4 apples in the bowl plus 6 apples in the tree equal a total of 10 apples.

Pattern – The repetition of numbers or objects; list of numbers that follow a rule ____ 3, 6, 9, 12, __, 18 What comes next in the pattern?

Subtraction Subtract The action of taking away or comparing groups. X X Minus Sign

Difference The amount by which one quantity is greater or less than another. There are 3 women and 2 men. What is the difference between the number of women and men?

Equal two things with the same value or amount The pickup truck and the car have an equal number of wheels.

Take Away Taking away will make the larger number smaller. There were eight pieces of candy in a box. One fell out. How many pieces of candy were left in the box?

Separate Separating a smaller amount from the larger number will reduce the larger number. 7 cars were on the highway. Then 2 of the cars were in an accident. How many cars were not in the accident?

How Much More? How Many More? Comparing two amounts and finding the difference. The larger amount will be that much greater. The lion did 3 tricks. The tiger did 1 trick. How many more tricks did the lion do than the tiger?

How Many Fewer ? How many less? Compare the amounts and find the difference. The smaller amount will be that much less. How many fewer children are there than adults?

equation Minus Sign

Take Away Zero Zero taken away from any number will always equal that number. If you have 3 pieces of candy, and you don't give any away. How many pieces of candy do you have?"

Take Away One One taken away from any number will be one less than that number. 4 friends were running along the beach. 1 ran into the water. How many did not run into the water?

Take Away Two Plus Two facts are just two more than the number being added to two. Six cookies were on the plate. Santa ate two. How many cookies were left?

Count Down Begin with the largest number and count back until you have used up all of the smaller number.
