Syllabus Overview and Classroom Expectations Mr. Turner English II

Textbooks and Novels The textbooks are a class set. The textbooks should not leave the classroom without my permission. Regular Novels Julius Caesar Of Mice and Men Night The Glory Field We will be reading most of these novels in class. If you want to take the novel home, please come to me and I will check the novel out for you. Pre – AP Novels Things Fall Apart (Summer Read) Of Mice and Men Cry, the Beloved Country Julius Caesar The Glass Castle (If time permits) This is a fast-paced class, therefore you will have to check out, take home and read most of the novels on your own time.

Accelerated Reading / AR Sophomores need a total of 8 points each AR reading period AR Tests are now worth two daily grades. The first daily grade is based on the total amount of points earned. The second grade is based on the average of all the AR tests taken for that reading period. You must take AR tests during your own time (activity period, lunch, after school). If you have completed ALL of your work, then you may ask to complete an AR test during class. Pre – AP students: You will be required to test over AP novels for two reading periods. 1. October 9 – November January 29 – March 17 AR Reading periods/early point due dates are posted in class on the whiteboard. AR reading list can be found in the library. You may earn a total of 5 extra credit points on your overall daily grade percentage (40%) if you earn ALL of your AR points by the AR early due date. If you double the amount of reading points needed during each reading period, you will earn another 5 extra credit points on your overall daily grade. You can only earn a total of 10 extra credit points each reading period.

Homework Homework is always due at the beginning of class. You should turn ALL work into your class period’s tray on the front table. I will not accept work more than 10 days after the due date. Exceptions: 1. Absent Students 2. Discussed with me prior that the work would be late Late work will receive a 10 point deduction each day that it is late.

Comp Books Pre – AP and Regular English students will need to invest in a composition notebook. Elaborate journal entries will be entered in the comp. books and the entries will count for 1 daily grade and 1 major grade. We will discuss comp. book standards in more detail on a different day.

Timed writings Both regular and Pre – AP English students will be responsible for the completion of one timed essay each six weeks. The timed essays are meant to prepare you for the AP and E.O.C. exams. Students will receive 2 daily grades and 1 major grade for each timed writing.

Cheating Is NOT tolerated at all. Remember that plagiarism is cheating.

Discipline / Conduct Everyday Expectations Always bring your supplies Respect yourself and others Be in your assigned seat when the bell rings Follow directions the first time they are given Consequences First offense – Verbal Warning Second offense – lunch, activity, or after school detention Third offense – conference with the principal /parent Fourth offense – immediate removal to office via referral
