Creation vs. Evolution The Earth and modern day living things were created by God The Earth and living things were set in motion by random atomic collisions And modern living things evolved from the first organisms on Earth

Evolution: The random process of change in organisms over time to form new species better adapted to their surroundings.

What are the four points of Evolution? There are variations in individuals Environments create advantages and disadvantages for individuals Favorable traits will help an individual survive and reproduce. Those traits will be passed down Modern animals have evolved from ancient animals that have gone extinct

Variations Differences in rabbit fur color –Brown, white, black, mixed hair Differences in speeds of lions –Faster lions may catch more prey Differences in metabolism of bears –Bears may be able to survive longer on a meal with slower metabolism

Environment Examples: Polar bears are white because white blends in Polar bears can swim because they eat fish Polar bears have lots of fur to keep warm in the cold

Favorable Traits Dart frogs are brightly colored to warn predators –These frogs passed down their traits because they survived Male dart frogs are brighter than females –These frogs passed down their traits because they were more attractive to females Male dart frogs attract mates with loud croaks –These frogs have a larger territory of mates

Ancient ancestors Humans and other great apes evolved from ancient primates –Humans adapted to the savanna of Africa Whales evolved from ancient land mammals –Whales adapted to eating fish rather than land animals Crocodiles remained in a constant form for millions of years –Crocodiles adapted to life better than the dinosaurs
