Presentation transcript:

Draw an outline of a deserted island. Write on the island what problems you might face if you were stranded on a deserted island.

In 1524, Giovanni da Verrazano, became the first European to explore the coast of North Carolina.

In 1540, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto searched the mountain region of North Carolina for gold. He later became the first European to discover the Mississippi River.

Queen Elizabeth I of England grants Sir Walter Raleigh a patent (legal rights) to settle in the New World.

Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe reach the Outer Banks of North Carolina (Bodie Island) on Raleigh’s first expedition and encounter the Croatoan Indians. They survey the area and take two Native Americans, Manteo and Wanchese, back with them to England.

Ralph Lane led the second expedition which included John White, who recorded the land and people through paintings, and Thomas Harriot, a scientist who drew maps and communicated with the Native Americans.

John White leads Raleigh’s third expedition and attempt to colonize Roanoke Island.

Virginia Dare, John White’s granddaughter, becomes the first English child born in the New World.

John White sails back to England for food, tools, and other necessities.

John White returns to Roanoke Island after three years due to French pirates and a war between England and Spain.

John White discovers that all of the colonists are gone and Fort Roanoke is in ruins. White found a tree with “CROATOAN” carved on it, but found no cross which signaling distress or danger. John White returned to England, never to find the Lost Colony.

In 1607, the first permanent settlement in North America is established by John Smith and John Rolfe in Jamestown, Virginia.
