Paragraph with Supporting Evidence

Thesis Statement What you think happened? (I think that… or The Roanoke settlers…) Body You need to have at least 2 Clues supporting your thesis and 2 quotes from the clues within the body. Conclusion Sum it all up

John White did not find the Roanoke settlers that he left behind because they left the island to join the Croatoan tribe. Clue 5 indicates that on a tree “was grauen CROATOAN…without any crosse or signe of distresse” (Clue 5). The word Croatoan was the name of an American Indian tribe and area. John White told the colonists that if they left they should leave indication of their destination. This theory or hypothesis is also supported by Clue 10 which states that the Jamestown colonists went looking for the lost colonists and saw “nearby tribes who could read English and dressed similarly to Europeans” (Clue 10). They also encountered a boy who had fair skin and blonde hair. Using these two I hypothesize that the Roanoke settlers left Roanoke and assimilated into the Croatoan tribe.

Though I can see that it may seem as though these settlers joined with an American Indian tribe, I do not agree. Yes they wrote Croatoan on a tree, no clues say that the Croatoan’s were a friendly tribe. According to recent findings, it appears that the settlers did not stay with a tribe in the area, but headed down the southeast of the United States (Clue 9). They left 46 stones along their trail indicating that “they encountered a hostile tribe who massacred over half of the Roanoke” (Clue 9). I do not agree that they met friendly tribes afterwards.
