Presentation transcript:

In the late 1580s or early 1590s John White went back to Roanoke in hope of being reunited with his daughter and her family. When he got to the area that the colonists settled it was a ghost town. The only thing to give any reason to believe the colonists were ever there was the word CROATOAN written on two trees. When the crew tried going to Croatoan island where they though the colonists might be, they were drawn off course and they couldn’t afford to try again.

Some believe that the colonists were killed off by a disease or famine. Another popular idea is that they were killed off by people in surrounding areas. The people of Roanoke could have also left the colony to live in another place, as in maybe with the people who called themselves the Croatoans. They were all killed off by a severe storm. The colonists tried to go back to England and were lost at sea.

The only explanations that seem logical to me would be the fact that the people of Roanoke left the island or were forced to leave. They could have gotten lost on the way to a new area or went somewhere where they were never found and lived in seclusion. If they all died on the island from a disease or fight there would have to be bodies or clothes or teeth from the people who died. It just seems highly unlikely that they would all end up dead on the island and leave nothing behind.
