Functional, Technical and Creative Specs and Web Navigation

Introduction What is a functional spec? Why write a functional spec? Who writes one?

Define the Application What is it used for? What is it supposed to do? Who are the users? What are the metrics used for this application? Any previous similar application existing?

Develop Models User’s conceptual model Designer’s model Programmer’s model

Define the Information Flow Define the navigational elements- user perspective Diagram the organization of the information-can use Visio Create a prototype-you are designing the relationships of the objects in designer’s model Create wireframes-addresses layout not aesthetics Create mockups Design for functional requirements, business requirements, and user requirements

Technical Specs Basically the same process but they deal with the hardware, software, access requirements, etc.

Creative Specs and Web Navigation Creative is the look and feel of the website Web navigation is how the user maneuvers through the website. These may be included in the functional specs – this is dependent upon the company in which you work.
