Seven Steps to School Success Step 1: Manage Time Enforcing time schedules for homework is an effective way of increasing the number of assignments completed. Establish a consistent daily routine for your student to follow after each school day, including a designated time for homework. Step 2: Get Organized For many students, school-related problems are due to being unorganized rather than a lack of intelligence. Make a checklist of things your student needs to bring to and from school every day. Step 3: Set Priorities and Initiate Sometimes students fail to hand in assignments and fall behind because they simply don't know where to begin. Teach your student the essential skill of prioritizing by asking him to write down all the things he needs to do, including non-school-related activities, and then rank them in order of importance. Step 4: Get Focused Interruptions can disrupt your students’ concentration, prolong the time it takes to fulfill assignments, and increase errors. Set up a special place for doing homework that is well lit, comfortable, and distraction-free. Step 5: Motivate! Motivate! Motivate! Most students say they want to do well in school, yet many still fail to produce the level of work necessary to succeed. The reason is often lack of motivation. Acknowledge efforts, celebrate successes and praise process. Step 6: Take Time to Unwind / Balance Time Students who are constantly bombarded with activities and information often have difficulty attending in class or focusing on homework. After school, allow your student some time to relax (listen to music, talk on the phone, have a snack) before tackling their homework. Step 7: Get Involved / But Transfer Responsibility Your positive involvement increases homework engagement and school attendance, improves your child's attitude towards school, and decreases the likelihood of behavioral problems. However, you do not want to end up doing more work than the student does. Applying guidelines, setting limits and reinforcing good habits are the keys. Responsibility for completion is the students.
