Looking at some key terms: “After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself.” Vs 1 “So now, if the boy is not with us when I go back to your servant my father, and if my father, whose life is closely bound up with the boy’s life, sees that the boy isn’t there, he will die. Your servants will bring the gray head of our father down to the grave in sorrow. Gen 44: “Became one” – Some translations say that “the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David.” The Hebrew word means “was knit,” or better, was “bound up”. This is a strong term, and is used in Genesis 44:30 of Jacob’s love to Benjamin:

“And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself” Vs 3 Hebrew – Berith From a verb “ Bara” - “meaning 'to cut'. To cut covenant implies 'shedding of blood'. The word Covenant:

In Greek 2 words were used for Covenants a) Meaning of 'suntheke' It means 'to cut covenant together'. It refers to an agreement between two parties in which both parties are equally involved with joint obligations. Marriage is a covenant (suntheke). a) Suntheke and b) Daitheke

b) Meaning of 'diatheke'. The Greek word ‘diatheke’ is different from 'suntheke'. 'Diatheke' does not involve the action of two parties. It is the action of one party on behalf of another. It involves two parties in the sense that one is the benefactor the other is the beneficiary. God's covenant with Abram (Genesis 15, Bless those who bless you) God’s covenant with Noah (God will not destroy the earth with water again) God’s covenant with Moses (Blessing for obedience and Curses for disobedience) The beneficiary has no involvement in the agreement except a willingness to receive it.

This does not mean that God sent the evil spirit. It means God allowed the evil Spirit to attack Saul because of his anger, bitterness and jealousy. The next day an evil spirit from God came forcefully on Saul. 18Vs 10

“But the Spirit of God came even on him, and he walked along prophesying until he came to Naioth.” 19 Vs 24 A man with evil intentions was pursuing a man with godly intentions. Yet God pours out his Spirit on him. It just shows the grace of God, which wanted this man to repent and change. But Saul was not willing.

A Lesson from these Chapters….  God alone was David’s constant Companion “Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with David but had departed from Saul.” Vs 12 “In everything he did he had great success, because the Lord was with him.” Vs 14 “When Saul realized that the Lord was with David and that his daughter Michal loved David…” Vs 28

“Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am in distress; my eyes grow weak with sorrow, my soul and body with grief. My life is consumed by anguish and my years by groaning; my strength fails because of my affliction, and my bones grow weak. Because of all my enemies, I am the utter contempt of my neighbors and an object of dread to my closest friends— those who see me on the street flee from me. I am forgotten as though I were dead; I have become like broken pottery. For I hear many whispering, “Terror on every side!” They conspire against me and plot to take my life. But I trust in you, Lord; say, “You are my God.” Psalm 31:9-14 So David endured those 15 years of torment and torture from his own King, because the Lord was with him. His anguish is poured out in the book of Psalms.

David endured the suffering and the agony and the Lord makes a covenant with him, which is called the Davidic covenant.

“ ‘The Lord declares to you that the Lord himself will establish a house for you: When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with a rod wielded by men, with floggings inflicted by human hands. But my love will never be taken away from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.’ 2 Sam 7:11-16

David became a type of Christ through his suffering and agony. “He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.” John 1:11 “The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus. You handed him over to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate, though he had decided to let him go. You disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you. You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. We are witnesses of this. Acts 3: 13-15

“Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” Matt 26: Because of Jesus's suffering and death, he makes a New covenant with us.

Today God allows certain things to happen in our lives so that His plans may be fulfilled in our lives. It will seem absurd, torturous, inhuman, weird and unnecessary. “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 17:33

Christ of the Andes

“For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.” Heb 9: 15
