3 rd Quarter 6 th Grade Math Lesson 1 Common Core 6. SP.1 Statistical Variability.

What is Statistics?  Statistics are numerical data relating to a group of individuals; statistics is also the name for the science of collecting, analyzing and interpreting such data. 6 th Grade Meaning  Statistics deals with collecting, organizing, and interpreting pieces of information or data.

How do you collect Statistics?  Statistics are collected by asking questions.  These questions must be asked correctly or you can’t display the information on a chart or graph.  All of the questions that are asked must be a Statistical Question ; this ensures that you will have variability, a target population and your question is interesting.

What is a Statistical Question ? AA statistical question is one in which you don't expect to get a single answer, you have a specific/ target population, and you are asking an interesting question.  essons/540- recognizing-statistical- questions essons/540- recognizing-statistical- questions

Examples of Statistical Questions  What type of toppings do 6 th graders at Dunbar like on their pizza?  What is the favorite subject of the 6 th graders at Dunbar?  Who is the favorite teacher of the 6 th graders at Dunbar?  Ask yourself, “Does this question have the 3 important parts below?” 1. Specifies a certain population 2. Ask interesting question to the population 3. There will be variability in answers( 4- 6 answers)

How do you create a statistical questions?  Please take notes during the mini film Asking statistical questions | LearnZillion

Is it or is it NOT Statistical?  How old are the students at Dunbar?  How old am I?  How many pets do I own?  What are the EQT scores of the students in my class?  What is my math test score?  What is my favorite type of cupcake?  What is the height of each person in my class?

Convert Non-Statistical questions into Statistical question  Do you like ice cream?  Who was the first president of the United States?  Do you like McDonalds?  Do you like Nike tennis shoes?  Do you like rock music? RRemember that all statistical question must contain 3 important properties? 11. Has a target audience and the audience is named 22. Question must be interesting to audience 33. Answer must have variability (4-6 answers)
