Preventing Cuts 1. When you use a knife, cut away from your body. 2. Never point a knife or other sharp instrument at others. 3. Use a knife only for Cutting food. 4. Wash knives separately from other dishes

Preventing Cuts Cont… 5. To open cans, use a clean opener that makes a clean edge and throw away the can top immediately. 6. Never pick up Broken Glass with your bare fingers, sweep up broken glass with a broom and dust pan. Dispose of trash immediately. ****Sharp knives are safer than dull knives because they give the user more control.

Preventing Falls 1. Clean up spills right away to prevent falls. 2. Use a ladder or step stool to reach high shelves. 3. All rugs should have a rubber backing. 4. Do not walk on wet floors. *** Toys on the floor of home kitchens may cause accidents. Children should not be allowed to play in food preparation areas.

Using Electricity Wisely Electricity can give you a severe shock or burn or even kill you. 1. Never use an electrical appliance if your hands are wet or if you are standing on a wet surface. 2. Keep electrical cords away from the range and sink. 3. Never use an appliance with a damaged cord.

Using Electricity Wisely 4. To disconnect an appliance hold the plug not the cord. 5. Don’t run electrical cords under rugs. 6. If you can’t get food out of an appliance unplug it. 7. Do not overload an electric circuit.

Preventing Burns and Fires 1. Wear close fitting clothes and roll up long sleeves. **Dangling Jewelry and ties are also a danger, remove them before cooking. 2. Keep flammable materials away from the range. 3. Always use dry potholders to handle hot pans.

Preventing Burns and Fires Cont… 4. To prevent steam burns lift the cover of a hot pot on the side away from you. 5. Wait until the range cools before you clean it. 6. Stand to one side when you open the oven door. 7. Slide out the oven rack when putting in or removing pans. 8. Keep Aerosol spray cans away from heat. 9. Learn how to use a fire extinguisher.

Grease fires DO: 1. Turn off heat source. 2. Smother the flames with salt or baking soda. 3. Put a lid on the pan to cut off oxygen to the fire. 4. Leave the building if the fire is out of control. Call 911 or 20100

Grease Fires These are the Don’ts 1. Never pour water on a grease fire. 2. Carry the burning pan to the sink.

Preventing Poisonings Poisons enter the body through mouth, nose, and eyes. 1. Read and follow the label directions. 2. Buy only what you need and can use. 3. Follow the label and directions carefully and wear protective items as directed. 4. Open windows and/or use a fan when directions call for a well vented area. 5. Never mix household cleaners.

Preventing poisonings cont…. 6. Never spray towards yourself or another person. 7. Insecticide is a poison which kills insects and other pests, food and cookware can be contaminated by it. 8. Keep household chemicals in their original containers. 9. Never store chemicals in the same cabinet with food. 10. Keep household chemicals in a locked cabinet if young children are around. 11. If someone is poisoned call 911 of poison control.
