NHMFL-PFF Strategic Plans: Achieving 100 T Chuck Mielke Director of the NHMFL-PFF
Where are we today 85 T Operations user program – World Leading and Unique User Environment – Currently executing our second call of proposals Set World Record for non-destructive high field (89 Tesla) Have the Worlds largest (electrical) Pulsed Power System – 1.4 GVA Has Enabled the Only Reliable Fields > 80T +600 MJ pulse capacity use 140 MJ for the 85 T magnet outsert Have established a world leading competency in Fermi Surface Topology using all NHMFL magnets (especially the 85 T)
Where are we going? 100 T (Operational System Verification) Acceptable risk field for user operations – Based on analysis of mechanics at peak field. (Primarily determined by outsert) 100 T user operations
How? By reducing bore from 15 to 10 mm – Insert delivers 61.3 T by itself – Outsert delivers (37.0 – 3.3) T = 33.7 T Same risk to outsert as current 85 T operations To reach 100 T outsert must deliver 5 T more Assess risk of 42 T outsert field
When? (Major Milestones) 10 mm Insert Cad Design ( Done Aug 2011) 42T outsert Eng. Risk Assessment Nov 30 th mm insert completed by Jan 30 th 2011 Test to 95 T or higher (Mar – Apr 2011) 100 T user operations analysis (June 2011) Upgrade for 100 T user ops … (2012 – 2014) – Upgraded outsert and spares (coils 1-4 of the outsert)
