The Cause On the 1st of December 1955, Mrs. Rosa Parks, an African-American seamstress, was arrested in Montgomery, Alabama for not standing and letting a white bus rider take her seat.

Rosa Parks and Martin L. King Jr. D r. Martin Luther King, Jr. was pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery. He and other African- American community leaders felt a protest of some kind was needed.

Pres. Bill Clinton and Rosa Parks In 1996, Rosa Parks was presented, by President Bill Clinton, with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. This is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a civilian by the United States Government.

Awards and Honors Rosa Parks with the NAACP's highest award, the Spingarn Medal, in The Rosa Parks Congressional Gold Medal bears the legend "Mother of the Modern Day Civil Rights Movement".

Rosa Parks Death In 2004, Rosa was diagnosed with progressive dementia and died the following year on October 24, Three days after Rosa's death, all of the city buses in Montgomery and Detroit reserved their front seats with black ribbons in her honor, and remained this way until Rosa was put into her final resting place.
