Dawn of the Dead (George A Romero, 1978) Harry Golding puNE1cX03c

Trailer Genre: horror, post apocalyptic Narrative: survivors hide out in a mall during the zombie apocalypse but it later gets overrun Unique selling point: it is the follow up to a hugely successful cult classic Target audience: 18+ as it is full of bloody violence Music: tense techno style music Shot types: lots of close ups to show the emotions of the characters Pace: fast paced to reflect the fear of the characters Dialogue: shows news reports telling people how dangerous the zombies are. Voiceover: telling you that it is the follow up to his first film Special effects: there isn’t any special effects to make it more real

Structural conventions Opening: In the trailer it shows the survivors, the zombies and the setting which is a mall. Build up: It shows that survivors are hopelessly outnumbered by the zombie outbreak. Problem: The situation that they are in is the zombie apocalypse. Events: It shows a lot of fighting which shows there will be a lot of obstacles for the characters to deal with.

Voiceover The voiceover tells you the disruption of the narrative by telling you that “the night of the living dead has ended, dawn of the dead has arrived.” This implies that the zombie virus has spread making it sound more dangerous. It also tells you about George A Romero’s earlier work and how successful ‘Night of the Living Dead’ was. It repeats the name ‘dawn of the Dead’ several times so that you don’t forget it. The deep dark voice in the voiceover sets the scene for the narrative.

Multimodel text The writing on screen is blood red this is to show that the film is going to be violent. The images on the screen are fast cut together to let you know that the pace of the film is going to be fasted paced and action packed. The only sound effects in the trailer are gun shots and this is to make it feel more realistic because there aren’t sound effects in real life. The music is tense this is make you feel on edge.
