What Tools Do Scientist Use?

Magnifying Tools This tool is used to make small objects appear larger. It lets you see details that you can’t see with your eyes alone. Microscope

Hand Lens or Magnifying Glass This tool is held in your hand to help make objects appear larger than they are with just your eyes. Magnifying Box This tool is used to put bugs, pebbles, or other small objects in to make them appear larger than they are with just your eyes.

Balance Scale Gram/school balance Triple beam Digital Double Pan This tool measures the mass of objects. These four balance scales will measure the same, but work differently.

Spring Scale This tool is used to measure force such as weight or friction. It measures in units called Newtons. You usually hang your objects from it.

Measurement Tools Measuring Tape Rulers Yard or Meter Stick This tool is used to measure things that are curved or an unusual shape. One side measure in inches and the others side in centimeters. This tool measures flat surfaces. It measures in inches on one side and in centimeters and millimeters on the other side. This tool also measures flat surfaces. Yard sticks measure in inches and feet. Meter sticks measure in centimeters and meters.

Measuring Cup Graduated Cylinder This tool measure liquids in ounces or cups. This tool measure volume of objects. Fill with water. Measure. Then add object and remeasure. Find the difference.

Thermometer This tool measure the temperature of liquids and air. It measure in degrees of Celsius and Fahrenheit.

Helpful Tools Tweezers or Forceps This tool helps you grab things. Dropper This tool helps you get small amounts of liquid. Stop watch or timer Calulator This tool helps you keep track of time. This tool helps you keep your math facts correct.

Research Tools Computer Notebook Your brain Books This tool will allow you to search for things quickly. This tool will allow you to take your research with you. This tool will allow you to keep track of your research. This tool will help you come up with prior knowledge.

Documenting Tools Notebook and pencil Camera Graphs These tools help you keep track of things you discover. This tool will give you a visual image of your discoveries. This tool will help others understand your discoveries at a glance.

Safety Tools Goggles Mask Gloves Lab Coat This tool protects your eyes. This tool protects your mouth. This tool protects your hands. This tool protects your clothes.
