Greek History By:Jeremy and Anthony ●In 1550 B.C the Mycenaeans are the first known Greek speakers in the world. ● In 1400 B.C. the Minoan civilization is wiped out by a huge volcanic explosion causing tidal waves and earthquakes. ●in 776 B.C the first ever Olympic Games were held in in Greece. ●In 546 B.C the Persian Empire conquers most of the land of Greece. ●In 480 B.C the Greek cities defeat the Persians at sea. ●In 430 B.C fighting city-states break out in a war that is known as the Peloponnesian War. Athens eventually loses another war to the heavily armed Spartans ●In 338 B.C king Phillip of Macedonia conquers Greece that has been weakened by the huge war. ●In 145 B.C the Persian army once again conquers the Greek empire. ●In 431B.C Athens eventually loses the war with the other cities. ●In 480 B.C the city of Athens becomes the head of a league known as the Delian league. ● B.C the son of King Phillip Alexander The Great conquers a lot of land and brings Greek traditoin to the lands that he conquers.

Greek People ●Nearly two thirds of the people live in large cities. ●Greece’s people are very welcoming to strangers. ●People in Greece usually wear black and white to respect the dead. ●98% of Greek people show up to Greek orthodox churches. ●Greek children don’t celebrate birthdays. ●About 11 million people live in Greece. ●Most people speak Greek. ADVANCED ●In Greece “What is your name?” is “Po se lene” (po-seh-leh-neh). ●In Greece “My name is Chrys” is said as “Me lene chrys” (meh leh-neh hree-sah). ●The final Greece advanced words are: “Excuse me. Greek Homes ●A lot of Greek people live in cities. ●They are modern homes. ●Many Greek homes have no yards. ●Most homes have balconies. ●A lot of homes have very colorful doors and windows. ●Homes are made of stone, brick, and clay. ●Greek homes are similar to American homes. ●Greek homes are very close to each other. ●Ancient Greek homes were built around a courtyard. Greek Activities ● A really fun thing to do in greece is to climb the biggest tree in Pelion. ●You can travel to Acropolis. ●You can go snorkling in the beach in Kea, the Skala Eressos and the Kamares beach. ●You can go to a really good pool in Eressos, Lesvos. ●You can have very fun in the snow but it does not snow that much. ●Taking ferry boats to places is really fun in Greece. Greek Holidays and Celebrations ●They celebrate Easter in Greece. ●Easter is a bigger holiday than Christmas in Greece. ●Easter is celebrated on Sunday in either the end of March or the beginning of April. ●Easter celebrations being after 40 days of fasting(a time when people do not eat or drink during the day). ●Children play a game with their eggs, each child holds an egg and tries to break another child’s egg. ●The child left with the unbroken egg is considered lucky.
