The Giver Introduction

Science fiction stories take place in a fantasized place or time. They can be set on another planet or on Earth in the past, present, or future. Science fiction stories have some element of science in their plot. The Giver is a science fiction story. What is Science Fiction?

Utopia The Giver is set in a utopian society. A utopia is a society in which everything is supposed to be perfect. No problems ever occur, and there is no pain. Often these types of societies take away the rights of the people in the society in order to control their actions.

About the Author Lois Lowry is the author of The Giver, and this novel was her first science fiction novel. When writing this novel, Lowry wanted to create a safe, comfortable world that would cause her readers to think about their own lives. Lowry won a Newberry Award for this book.

About the novel In this novel, a young man named Jonas lives in a “perfect” society. At the age of twelve, all children are given their life assignments. Jonas is given the job of the Receiver of Memory. During his training, Jonas learns that his community is not as perfect as he had once thought. Jonas begins to question everything he has ever known.
