Answering Doctrinal Questions (Part 10 ) Stan Crowley But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; (1 Pet 3:15 NKJV)

 No.  There is a very general Biblical principle that stipulates that man is head of woman: (1 Cor 11:3 NKJV) But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. 27. May women take an active leader- ship role in worship services when Christian men are present? 2

 God gives the bases of these roles.  One place is in I Timothy 2: (1 Tim 2:12 NKJV) … not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, … (1 Tim 2:13 NKJV) For Adam was formed first, then Eve. (1 Tim 2:14 NKJV) And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. 27. May women take an active leader- ship role in worship services when Christian men are present? 3

 God gives the bases of these roles.  Another place is in I Corinthians 11: (1 Cor 11:3 NKJV) … the head of woman is man, … (1 Cor 11:8-9 NKJV) For man is not from woman, but woman from man. Nor was man created for the woman, but woman for the man. 27. May women take an active leader- ship role in worship services when Christian men are present? 4

 The reasons man is head of woman are: Man was created first. Woman was formed from man. Woman was created for the man. Woman was deceived.  God’s commands are not based on culture. They do not change from place to place. They do not change through the ages.  There is no Scriptural basis for changing God’s instructions for the role of women or actions in worship based on culture. 27. May women take an active leader- ship role in worship services when Christian men are present? 5

 Two related principles are in the N.T.  [1] When the whole church is assembled for worship (I Cor. 11:18, 11:20, 14:23), women are to be silent (not speak). (1 Cor 14:34 NKJV) Let your women keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak; but they are to be submissive, … (1 Cor 14:35 NKJV) … for it is shameful for women to speak in church. Note that in this context, “silent” is explained as not “to speak.” 27. May women take an active leader- ship role in worship services when Christian men are present? 6

 [2] Women are not to usurp the authority of a man in Spiritual activities. (1 Tim 2:11 NKJV) Let a woman learn in silence [ASV: quietness] with all submission. (1 Tim 2:12 NKJV) And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence [ASV: quietness]. In this passage, the Greek word for “quietness” means “lack of disturbance” from a root word for “keeping one’s seat.” 27. May women take an active leader- ship role in worship services when Christian men are present? 7

 These two principles combine to preclude women from: Speaking or taking any non-verbal leadership role in a worship service [assembly of whole church; men present]. {Passing communion trays or ushering is an out-of-the-seat, conspicuous role.} Teaching or leading a prayer in a mixed Bible class, even outside a worship service [men present; not assembly of whole church]. 27. May women take an active leader- ship role in worship services when Christian men are present? 8

 Christ speaks of allowable remarriage.  The teachings of the Scriptures on remarriage after divorce are succinctly summed up by Christ in Matt. 19:9. (Mat 19:9 KJV) And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery. 29. How many Scriptural reasons are there for divorce? List reason(s). 9

(Mat 19:9 KJV) And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.  If the fornication of one of the partners is not the cause of the dissolution of the union, then neither party can remarry again ever.  If there is fornication, then the one who was faithful may remarry (to a Scripturally qualified candidate) How many Scriptural reasons are there for divorce? List reason(s).

 Paul does not give an exception beyond the one given by Jesus.  Paul repeatedly affirms the general principles. (1 Cor 7:11 NKJV) But even if she does depart, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband. And a husband is not to divorce his wife. (1 Cor 7:39 KJV) The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married … How many Scriptural reasons are there for divorce? List the reason(s).

 Yes.  All of God’s moral laws apply to non- Christians.  The Corinthians were immoral before they became Christians. 28. Does Christ’s law concerning marriage, divorce, and remarriage apply to non-Christians? 12

(1 Cor 6:9-10 NKJV) Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. (1 Cor 6:11 NKJV) And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God. 28. Does Christ’s law concerning marriage, divorce, and remarriage apply to non-Christians? 13

 Even for those who are not Christians: Sexual activity without a God-approved marriage is immoral. (Heb 13:4 KJV) Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge. Being in a God-disapproved marriage is a continuing state of adultery. (Mat 19:9 KJV) …Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: … 28. Does Christ’s law concerning marriage, divorce, and remarriage apply to non-Christians? 14
