The Break from Rome

Britain was Catholic

Henry VIII wanted a son, but despite trying, Catherine of Aragon was unable to give him one.

In Tudor times, Catholics were not permitted to divorce, as it was seen as a very bad thing. So Henry VIII asked the Pope if his marriage to Catherine of Aragon could be declared null.

The King of Spain was a very influential man in Europe at this time, and the Pope had to check with him. Because Spain was a strongly Catholic country, he would not allow the annulment.

Driven by the want for a child, Henry VIII made himself the head of his own church, called The Church of England, so he could be divorced and marry again.

The Church of England was a Protestant church. Protestants and Catholics are both Christians, but they have different views about parts of the Christianity, and throughout history there has been bad feelings between the two beliefs.

The Dissolution of the Monasteries To fund his new church, and other ventures, Henry VIII ordered Catholic churches to be raided, taking anything valuable. This angered Catholic people.

Henry VIII also had the bible re-written in English for the first time.

Drama Group 1 Henry VIII wanting a child, but Catherine of Aragon can’t provide him one. Henry VIII asks the Pope permission to divorce, but the King of Spain makes sure the Pope does not allow this.
