Mystery Powders Lab Can unknown kitchen powders be identified using physical and chemical properties?

HYPOTHESIS Think about what the manipulated and responding variables are. Use an If…, then… statement to write a hypothesis.

Variables Manipulated Variable: Responding Variable: physical and chemical tests unknown powder identification

Check your hypothesis! ➢ Is it an If…, then… statement? ➢ Are there any personal pronouns? ➢ Is it testable?

Hypothesis If chemical and physical tests are performed on unknown powders, then the powders can be identified.

Chemical Tests 1.VINEGAR 2. BAKING SODA SOLUTION 3. IODINE 4. HEAT 1.reacts with bases 2. reacts with acids 3. reacts with starches 4. changes physical and chemical properties of substance

Lab Rules ★ NO horseplay ★ No sitting during chemistry labs ★ Lab area must be kept neat at all times. ★ You may not leave the lab table except to get lab materials. ★ Only one lab partner may leave at a time.

At the end of the lab: ❏ Clean up lab table, leaving all equipment as you found it and throwing away all trash. ❏ Neatly wash hands with soap and water. ❏ Return PPG (Personal Protective Gear) ❏ Line up all lab sheets for teacher stamp. ❏ After getting stamp, work quietly on lab questions in classroom area.
