Making an Evidence-Based Claim “Show Me the Evidence!”

Child workers during the Industrial Revolution were treated poorly by their employers. Reformers worked to stop this. Factory owners didn’t care that children working in their factories were getting sick and injured on the job; they were expected to work and meet the demands of the company. Reformers fought against this. One reformer, Mother Jones, fought to end child labor. She said, “few industrialists abided by child labor laws.” She also noted when attending a protest in Pennsylvania that children, “Came into the Union Headquarters, some with their hands off, some missing a thumb, some with their fingers off at the knuckle.” It was clear child labor needed to be ended. Which one the best? Why? Which one the best? Why?

An Evidence-Based Claim requires the student to cite textual evidence from a reading passage to support a claim. The claim must supported by textual evidence. My Claim About the Text- State a conclusion that can be supported with evidence from the text after reading and thinking about it closely. Why is my reformer the most “progressive” of the Progressive Reformers discussed in class?
