Making an Evidence-Based Claim “Show Me the Evidence!”

Child workers during the Industrial Revolution were treated poorly by their employers. Reformers worked to stop this. Factory owners didn’t care that children working in their factories were getting sick and injured on the job; they were expected to work and meet the demands of the company. Reformers fought against this. One reformer, Mother Jones, fought to end child labor. She said, “few industrialists abided by child labor laws.” She also noted when attending a protest in Pennsylvania that children, “Came into the Union Headquarters, some with their hands off, some missing a thumb, some with their fingers off at the knuckle.” It was clear child labor needed to be ended. Which one the best? Why? Which one the best? Why?

An Evidence-Based Claim requires the student to cite textual evidence from a reading passage to support a claim. The claim must supported by textual evidence. My Claim About the Text- State a conclusion that can be supported with evidence from the text after reading and thinking about it closely. Why is my reformer the most “progressive” of the Progressive Reformers discussed in class?

Use your data sheets to find your textual evidence!

Evidence Excerpt 1 from the text Evidence Excerpt 2 from the text According to the text, “Paul’s Quaker belief in equality for all influenced her actions in fighting for suffrage for women.” “Paul and her supporters were arrested, and imprisoned and went on hunger strikes.” Both pieces of textual support come from the data sheet on Alice Paul.

Your introduction paragraph must define what a Progressive is and introduces the reformer to the reader. The last sentence(s) should state why your reformer is considered a Progressive. A progressive can be defined as a person who favors change or reform. In the years following the Second Industrial Revolution and the wave of New Immigration, a group of reformers, who called themselves Progressives, targeted key areas of society and/or social issues that were in desperate need of change. One such reformer was Alice Paul…...

Your body paragraph must cite two pieces of evidence from the reading passage supporting your claim as to why he/she is the most “progressive” of the reformers. Your Body Paragraph must use Evidenced-Based words connecting where you found your proof in the text.
