IES San Juan Baustista THE FINAL STEP: WRITING YOUR SOLUTION

THE UN GOAL During debate, your main task as a delegate of your country is to create a solution for the problems discussed in committee. Do you think the IMF should reform? How and in what ways?

QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER How will your country work to create solutions to the issue of loan reform and forgiveness for developing countries? What type of resolution (solution) do you propose and support? What specifically do you want to happen to solve this?

QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER Who should be responsible for this solution? (The UN, a specific country in particular, local organizations, etc.)

PROPOSE SOLUTIONS FOR…. Loan forgiveness Conditionality Voting Reform

The solutions will help you to write a resolution at the conference, so think carefully and provide as many details as you can. If you think countries should have fair representation in voting, for example, what would that look like? The same voting powers? A differently distributed number? Different criteria? Explain!

EXAMPLE: GENDER VIOLENCE IN DENMARK

Denmark is confident that this Commission can bring about an end to violence against women without compromising the sovereignty of member states. Education remains perhaps the most useful tool in protecting victims of gender-based violence. Governments, UN agencies, and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) can plan a coordinated campaign that educates national populations on the various ways women are violently targeted. Similarly, harmful traditions, such as honor killings and female genital mutilation, must be stopped by reforming traditional views of women in society. Children of both sexes need to be taught at an early age to value the rights of women in order to prevent such violence in their generation.

Another way to stop gender violence would be to reproach member states that consistently violate treaties such as the Convention on Political Rights of Women (1952), the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (1979), and the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women (1993). Although this Committee cannot impose sanctions, it can pass resolutions verbally condemning states that commit human rights violations. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights can also meet with representatives of governments that violate the above treaties to discuss possible solutions.

EXAMPLE: ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY IN VIETNAM

Vietnam’s first proposal is based on sustainable industrialization. We uphold the creation of a law requiring every factory built to be maintained at least in half by renewable energies, such as solar or hydroelectric power. Since Vietnam is not a completely developed country, we call upon the UN for financial support to build these power plants. We also propose tax breaks to reward the businesses that use renewable energies to power more than half of their factories. Vietnam, together with other countries, could use Grassroots programs to collect funds. That money could improve knowledge, tools, capacity and coordination for development of climate change policy and investment in Vietnam’s sustainable development.

To raise the percent of the sustainable development of aquaculture, Vietnam will raise the fishing production in the form of intensive cultivation, improving the quality of input materials and diversifying markets. Vietnam suggests creating more green areas in order to promote a society more conscious about taking care of the environment. We are also committed to improving the quality, accessibility, and effectiveness of public transportation, so that fewer people will rely on cars or motorbikes. Vietnam will follow all the agreements reached in this conference and we hope our suggestions will be considered as a path to the improvement of our world.
