Waste Pathways: Outlook 2007 Collectors and Council Working Together Geoff Johnston (East Waste)

So Far Today on green organics You’ve heard the view of a Processor and an End User You’ve heard some very strong arguments regarding the value to the environment The points regarding the direct savings to Councils are strong indeed We need to get this right and we need to work together to succeed!

Working together to what end? REDUCE CONTAMINATION IN ORGANICS COLLECTED FROM HOUSEHOLDS TO PRESERVE THE MARKET PLACE FOR THE END USE OF THIS VALUABLE MATERIAL TO PROVIDE A QUALITY, UNDERSTANDABLE REGIME OF COLLECTION TO EDUCATE OUR PUBLIC IN THE MOST EFFICIENT AND EFFECTIVE MANNER.

What does it really look like when it is tipped out of the trucks?

Some Principals of our Systems of waste Management We rely on a system of Source Separation of waste streams CDL (Container Deposit Legislation) allows for effective diversion of most of the glass out of the various streams Our Demographic and Urban layout enables efficient collection systems

Therefore - Education and Understanding Who? Drivers CSO’s Residents Elected Members and Staff

Opportunities Driver Training Equipment Colour CCTV Understanding of contaminant implication Managing contamination Checking bins Noting bins Leaving bins

Opportunities CSO Training ZWSA Course Ride in Green Organics collection vehicles View Transfer station facility Support information Maps IT Driver support Information support for Clients

How to Educate the Resident Targeted Captive audience Put the bin down Sticker the bin The Broader approach Information packs Bin stickers Media – Council, Public

Elected Members and Staff Visit the Composting facilities See first hand what the contaminant looks like Ride shotgun in the collection vehicle to see the issues first hand Visit ALL the facilities involved in managing household waste output

It’s all about relationships (as always) If CSO’s and Drivers understand each others roles then the approach to the enquirer is uniform and aimed at a common result! AVOIDANCE OF CONTAMINANTS IN THE ORGANICS STREAM We need to deliver a triple bottom line to our communities

Thank You for your Time and Attention
