African-American soldiers in the North Discrimination Separate regiments commanded by white officers Not allowed to rise above rank of captain Lower pay, higher mortality rate. Massachusetts 54 th Regiment First regiment of Northern blacks to fight in the Civil War. (1863). 600 men in the regiment.
