Lets Get The Facts On STDs

What is an STD? An infection you can get from having sex with someone who has the infection. Bacteria, Parasites and Viruses are the causes Bacteria: living things that have only one cell. Most bacteria won’t hurt you but infectious bacteria can make you ill. Parasites: A parasite is an organism that lives on or in a host (you) and lives off your resources Virus: a small parasite that cannot reproduce by itself but can force your cells to reproduce the virus

-Common STD that affects men and women -Can be spread vaginally, anally, or orally -Affects the reproductive system Chlamydia

Short Term Women Abnormal vaginal discharge Burning sensation when urinating Men Discharge from their penis Burning sensation when urinating Pain and swelling in one or both of their testes Long Term Women Possibly spread to your uterus and fallopian tubes causing pelvic inflammatory disease This can lead to infertility, long term pelvic pain and potentially deadly ectopic pregnancy(pregnancy outside the uterus) Men Infection can spread to tube that carries sperm from the testicles, causing pain and fever In rare cases, can lead to infertility Increased chances of getting HIV(both men & women)

Gonorrhea Common Infection is young people age Can infect the genitals, rectum, and throat Gonorrhea is easily spread and can even be passed from mother to child during childbirth

Gonorrhea Short Term Wo men and Men -Pain Urinating -Abnormal Discharge -Anal Itching or Bleeding Painful Bowel Movements Women: Bleed between Periods Men: Swollen Testicles Long Term Women Pelvic Inflammatory Disease: can lead to other problems like infertility Formation of scar tissue that blocks fallopian tubes Ectopic pregnancy: pregnancy outside of the uterus, in the fallopian tubes, very dangerous Long-term pelvic/abdominal pain. Infertility: not being able to have children Men May become sterile ( Cant have children) Can spread to blood or joints (life-threatening)

A STD caused by two types of viruses Herpes Simplex Type 1 and Herpes Simplex Type 2 You can get herpes by having oral, vaginal, or anal sex with someone who has the disease. Fluids found in a herpes sore carry the virus, and contact with those fluids can cause infection. Herpes

Short Term Most people don’t have any symptoms or mistake it for a simple skin irritaion or cold 1 or more blisters in the gentials area, rectum, or mouth Blisters are normally painful and take weeks to heal Long Term Herpes is not curable but managable Can be spread if you touch your sores and touch another open region of your body or soemone elses body

Condoms Male Condoms Worn by the man, Keeps sperm from getting into a woman’s body. Latex condoms, the most common type, help prevent HIV and other STDs, as do the newer synthetic condoms Failure rate: 18% Condoms can only be used once. You can buy condoms, KY jelly, or water-based lubricants at a drug store. Do not use oil-based lubricants such as massage oils, baby oil, lotions, or petroleum jelly with latex condoms. They will weaken the condom, causing it to tear or break. Female Conddoms Worn by the woman, the female condom helps keeps sperm from getting into her body. It is packaged with a lubricant and is available at drug stores. It can be inserted up to eight hours before sexual intercourse. Helps prevent STDs Failure rate: 21%
