Integrating Social Studies and Literacy Presented by: Terry Dikes & Cindy Hundley October 12, 2013

I can… analyze texts for their standards-based potential apply English Language Arts Standards to my Social Studies instruction. integrate Literary and Social Studies strategies and techniques for better comprehension of primary sources, secondary sources and other content-related texts.

Analyzing Charlotte’s Web

Charlotte’s Web How can we use Charlotte’s Web to meet Literacy Standards in our classes? Individually, review your Standards placemat and highlight standards that were met by this activity. Be prepared to share.

Charlotte’s Web: Text Set

Charlotte’s Web Text Set After reviewing the text set, return to the Standards placemat and highlight, in a different color, the additional standards that could be targeted through the integration of the text set. Be prepared to share.

Integration: Getting More Bang For Our Buck Review the Common Core Standards for English Language Arts. Review the Core Content 4.1 Standards for Social Studies. Work together to: –note which ELA Standards can be integrated into Social Studies instruction –note which Social Studies Standards can be integrated into Literacy instruction Be prepared to share.

Integration: How They Can Work Together Social Studies Standards That Can Be Met with Literacy Instruction Literacy Standards That Can Be Met with Social Studies Instruction

Why Merge? Authentic opportunities to learn and practice literacy are important techniques through which we engage students in thinking deeply and critically about social studies. Academic learning begins in early childhood and develops across all disciplines. Content knowledge is strengthened when educators integrate discipline specific literacy into teaching and learning. Literacy skills including reading, writing, speaking, listening and critical thinking improve when content-rich learning experiences motivate and engage students. Students demonstrate their content knowledge through reading, writing, listening and speaking as part of a discipline literate community.

An Alternative to the Textbook: Text Sets A text set is a collection of related texts organized around a topic or line of inquiry. The line of inquiry is determined by an anchor text. The anchor text must be rich, complex and grade level. The anchor text is the focus of a close reading with instructional supports. The number of texts in a text set can vary depending on purpose and availability. The texts must “talk to one another” so that students build a coherent body of knowledge around a topic.

Strong Text Sets Build knowledge about a topic; meaningful connection to the anchor text Texts are authentic, rich and worthy of study Range of text types (literary and informational) and formats Text complexity levels support student achievement of the grade-level complexity demands of the CCSS.

Building a Text Set Search for children’s and young adult literature (literary). Search for multimodal primary sources (informational). Search for multimodal secondary sources (informational). Search for children’s and young adult magazines and general periodicals (literary and informational).

Resources for Building Text Sets Notable Books for a Global Society Orbis Pictus Award for Nonfiction Sibert Medal for Nonfiction Notable Social Studies Trade Books for Young People DocsTeach (App) Kids Discover Magazine National Geographic Discovery Education
