A little bit about myself…

What is Advanced Journalism? The study of journalism continues to have an important role in high school because of its contribution toward developing citizens who are effective both as individuals and as participating members of a democratic society. Successful participation in school newspaper production helps students develop objective and effective communication skills in the areas of listening, speaking, and writing; and promotes desirable character traits such as initiative, thoroughness, accuracy, cooperation, tact, resourcefulness, judgment, and dependability. This class will help students develop specialized skills in journalism and will cover all aspects of the creation and production of a school newspaper. How much time students spend working on The Arrow outside of the regular class hour depends on their use of class time, ability to delegate and hold staff writers accountable, knowledge and experience, and editor position. Course Expectations:  Come to class prepared to work EVERY DAY!!! - This means that students need to keep up with their individual assignments and be willing to participate and engage in classroom activities and discussions.  Be an active and assertive learner: challenge yourself; be willing to ask questions and investigate curiosities.  Complete all assignments with academic honesty and effort and meet all deadlines.  Invest the time and effort necessary to create and produce an accurate, educational, informative, interesting, appealing, and respected high school newspaper publication.

GRADES Grades are primarily based on points earned for contributions to each issue of The Arrow points = A points = B points = C *Some examples of how students earn points: -writing articles-writing headlines and captions -advertising contacts-article and design evaluations -designing pages- art work and photos *Points are deducted for not meeting deadlines Each student is required to complete a story ideas contribution sheet and an evaluation for each issue. Students are required to sell one ad/sponsorship per semester in order to fund our paper. *Ads for more than one issue count as two. I typically update grades on Q-Connect weekly (Fridays).

Some suggestions on how you can help your child succeed this year! Ask them questions about things that are happening in class. Check Q-Connect for grades. Encourage them to read the newspaper on a regular basis and discuss news issues with them. Remind them to seek help when needed. Read Westlake High School’s newspaper The Arrow to find out what is going on on our campus and to see what your children are producing as journalists.
