THE WIFE OF BATH JAYCEE MOAD

WHAT DID THE WIFE OF BATH DO? The wife of bath back in medieval time was basically the husbands possession. She was a housewife and always tried to please her husband. She had some education but not a lot like we do today. She was denied the privilege of college She wasn’t aloud in the work force. She reflected a women’s attempt to take control.

SOCIETY, MEDIEVAL CLASS, RIVALRIES, WEALTHY OR POOR? The wife of bath was rich, middle aged and impressive. She belonged in the middle class and dressed nice and lively. One thing she valued was her independence. When her fourth husband cheats, she gets revenge by making him jealous. The fifth husband would always beat her. She was successful financially and in marriage.

HOW DOES CHAUCER DESCRIBE THIS CHARACTER Chaucer sees the wife of bath as important because she takes up a lot of space in the pilgrimage and in the poem. He describes her as being really experienced in the art of love and art of passion. She is a strong minded women and really powerful. She’s wealthy and takes control. She is always ready for revenge. He describes her bodily features and physical appearances like her clothes, legs, feet, and hips.

THREE QUOTES FOR PERSONALITY “The Wife’s numerous lovers and husbands have made her skilled in the “old dance” (line 477) “A worthy women from beside Bath city was with us, somewhat deaf, which was a pity.” (line ) “In making cloth she showed so great a bent” (lines 457) Her personality was outgoing and she loved to make cloth, and love being in control and wasn’t scared to tell her opinion.

CHAUCER AND THE PILGRIM Chaucher views the pilgrim as being passionate and she takes charge. According to Chaucer, she has had five church husbands. He also says she has been on three pilgrimages to Jerusalem. Chaucher shows irony because the wife wants to prove to the other pilgrims that she has been experienced in love. Sense she had five husbands, it probably means she cannot get along with any of them or their lacking something that she wants. It’s all based on long –lasting love, not short-love. The narrator sees the wife as being candid and honest. The narrator and Chaucer would see the wife of bath the same probably because she was her husbands possession and strong minded.

QUOTE TO SUM HER UP “A worthy woman from beside Bath city was with us, somewhat deaf, which was pity”. This explains that she was deaf and very worthy and lived a luxurious life.

THE WIFE’S OF BATH TALE The land was filled with fairies. It wasn’t a secret that the husband had long ears. Men climb family trees for glory. She wanted to be old and ugly until the day she died. The knight let the wife chose which one would give the most pleasure away. The knight saw how she was fair in all her charms and he held her in his arms. He gave her a thousand kisses at the end. They lived their life in perfect joy, even after having some fights and arguments. God was great to them.

TODAY’S SOCIETY The wife of bath today would basically be a stay at home mom and care a lot about her husband. She would do all the cooking, cleaning, take care of the kids, (with the help of her husband) Chaucer always explained how she was her husbands possession and was wealthy and powerful. Today, a wife of bath would probably keep the same husband and not be as wealthy if all she did was stay at home and clean/cook. Today the wife’s are aloud an education if they want them and they can work if they want to. There’s not much discrimination.
