Archibull Prize ISAbella 2014

The Completion of ISAbella … We glazed her so she shined brightly We brought her downstairs to show the school Everyone wanted a picture with her Displayed her at the John Flynn Place Gallery Explained her decorations and our ideas in the artwork analysis sections

Art and Environment It is easy to see that ISAbella created a big stir the last day of school This way we could see that by using art you could get people to care about cotton and the environment.

Sustainability We need to find ways of using even less water, using the clothes and recycling them too and thinking about where stuff comes from in the world and the people who produce it. Precious Resources … WaterFarm Land Peopl e

The Future of Cotton We got to thinking about what another 100 years might bring to the cotton industry and the students came up with some very futuristic ideas…

Tayla and Taylor were thinking… MAYBE IN THE FUTURE DRAIN SYSTEMS WILL HAVE A SPLIT WITH THE GREY WATER GOING TO THE COTTON FIELDS RECYCLED WATER PLANT COTTON IN RESTRICTED AREAS ON A BEACH WHERE PEOPLE AREN’T ALLOWED TO GO COTTON ISLANDS – RECLAIMING LAND FROM THE SEA COTTON GROWN IN WATER BUT SEALED SO NONE IS WASTED

Katie and Chelsea In the next 100 years maybe you could have a separate drain in the shower that can lead to the cotton fields so we aren’t wasting water. Also in the future the farmers will probably not be using the John Deere 7760 to harvest the crop so they will have a new machine that gets the water from the drain that has been recycled to water the cotton and harvest the plant at the same time.

Sarah Bradley thought… A way that we can limit water consumption with cotton is to purify salt water and use that to grow the cotton. In a hundred years we might have developed the seed of cotton which you eat or cotton that is self cleaning. This idea would save the land that the cotton cleaning facility would be on, therefore we are preserving our sacred lands and preserving our wonderful Australian environment.

Hannah thought… Reducing junk food so people don’t get overweight. This will reduce the amount of cotton used on one shirt instead you could possibly make two or three t-shirts. Using GM cotton so it grows in certain colours or so it grows into a shirt or a pair of pants in whatever size you want.

Tamika, Sionn, Alex and Darnell were thinking… In 100 years’ time we could recycle water by using the bath water or making old pool water that we do not need any more. When the cotton is first planted or first watered it stores the water in its stem like a cactus. A tree that produces 4 tonnes of cotton in one harvest, so you would only need like ten trees so this would take up less land. Cotton could be planted anywhere on Earth in deserts around water and any place on land.

Sarah R, Jamie, Shari and Shontelle’s Ideas… Our idea is to grow cotton on Mars because there may not be any living things on Mars. There could also ba a water supply that no one uses, so we can grow cotton on Mars and then we don’t have to use the Earth’s water Earth has water to use for things like underwater habitats like for coral and animals. We also need water on Earth for watering our plants, vegetable crops, we also need it for your own resources. Recycling water: we can reuse water after washing dishes and showering you can also reduce water usage

Julia was thinking… The Future of Cotton Maybe cotton won’t need water to grow. Maybe it will be genetically enhanced so it can grow in the arctic. So many things could happen to cotton in the future. Here are a few of my predictions. Instant What if a machine was invented in the future. That if you put say a small piece of bark in it, pressed a few buttons, waited 3 seconds and then a stack of paper instantly appeared. But instead of bark imagine if you put cotton into the device. You would obtain so many items such as clothing, house hold items etc. This is how I imagine cotton in the future. Floating What is the first thing that comes to your head at the word floating? Most likely pearl white clouds bobbing in a blue sky. But when I think of floating I think of floating platforms. Not just any floating platform though, cotton platforms. If you’re wondering what I mean by this, I mean a greenhouse with no roof, floating in the air sort of like a mobile farm. If we had these floating farms we could grow so many resources this is another one of my predictions of cotton in the future. Sprouting Colours My final prediction of cotton in the future has to do with dyes. What if a special type of dye was created and if you dipped a seed into the mixture and planted it you would receive very colourful produce. You’re guaranteed to win a prize for the most colourful.

Isabella Online Blogging was a fun experience. It was hard to navigate at first so we wrote everything in our journals but once we got going… We did videos… We did bloopers… We wrote poems… We talked about what we loved about ISAbella …

Judging ISAbella We don’t know if we won anything but we think ISAbella is pretty neat and we really enjoyed working together to create her. We can’t wait until she comes home to Cloncurry.
