Algorithm for washing your hair… Step 1: Wet your hair Step 2: Open the shampoo bottle Step 3: Pour shampoo in your hand Step 4: Apply to hair and lather Step 5: Rinse hair with water Step 6: Repeat if needed…

Car Wash Problem The school is having a car wash. On Saturday, 152 people signed up to have their car washed. If one student can wash 25 cars in a day, how many students will have to work on Saturday to finish the job? Spend a minute brainstorming about how you might solve this problem.

How can I solve using the standard algorithm?

How do I show without using “remainder”?

How do you write a remainder as a fraction?

How do I turn my quotient with remainder into a mixed number? Now you try…

Now…solve this problem using the division algorithm and write your quotient as a decimal

When do I stop? When you get no remainder When the decimal terminates.* (ends) When you find a repeating pattern* *If the decimal goes on and on, stop after three decimal places.*

Now try this in your foldable 200 ÷ 60

Problem #2 Jane has 90 inches of ribbon. She needs to make 16 bows. How many inches should she make each bow to have none leftover? Sometimes it makes more sense to show the quotient as a MIXED NUMBER. Simply put the remainder in the numerator and the divisor in the denominator.

Problem #3 Bob has $90 to give away to 8 friends equally. How much money will each person receive? Sometimes it makes more sense to show the quotient as a DECIMAL. To do so you need to add a decimal point and ANNEX a zero.
