Reminder of Goal of Math Summit I Reduce the need for remediation at the post-secondary level by 5% each year following the Summits.

Math Summit I created a need to further our initiatives, so Math Summit II was planned. Goal of Math Summit II Four Groups were developed to help us accomplish our overall goal of reducing remediation.  Parent Education  Elementary Math Specialist  Transition to College  Math Lab Support

Parental involvement and Education Facilitator Garnet Hauger Spring Arbor University

Increase awareness of parents in Jackson County about mathematics education Increase multiple levels of parent involvement Increase availability of resources for families

Recommendations Communicate with parents to increase their understanding of mathematics education Involve parents in the classroom in at least one way each year ( Math Nights, visit classrooms, etc.) Make available to parents and teachers a list of resources for tutoring, reinforcement, and enrichment activities, web sites, etc. (Collaborating with Math Lab Support Group) Provide training for tutors and other resource people and that reflects current teaching practices and curriculum

The members of the Parent Education and Involvement Planning Team will serve as pilot implementers at their respective schools, as well as support for implementation and data collection (and analysis). All recommendations will be implemented during the school year, during which the group will maintain communication electronically and meet in early 2011.

In non-technology based labs, this fall we are gathering pre and post testing data from several established math labs to look at levels of success. Establishing a list of tutors from local post- secondary institutions (education/work study) Goal 2

Establishing an online resource for students, staff, and parents – this is done This resource is a moving document. It will be continually updated with resources from all institutions involved Math Blog Goal 3
