Presentation To BAM Construction by Steve Fearnehough Crossway MD

“HEROES OF SCAFFOLDING” - QUOTE ON VAN THIEL WEBSITE Introduction Brief History ▪ Crossway established in 1996 ▪ Introduced the VAN THIEL Concept in 2002 after extensive trials with scaffolders and achieving great feedback ▪ Key Features are reduction in manual handling, high tensile tube used, and all materials palletised in special tube containers ensuring tidier sites. ▪ Heaviest tube weighs only 15.7kg – Maximum length is 4m (21ft Tubes used by rest of industry weighs 30kg)

Van Thiel used extensively on BAM sites in Holland.

CROSSWAY IDEAS & INNOVATIONS TO DELIVER ZERO HARM FOR BAM ▪ Constant review of accidents to operatives and their causes across the industry as analysed in the annual NASC Safety Report (Full Report can be downloaded from ▪ Safety guidance notes are reviewed every 5 years by the NASC for example SG4:10 is currently under review and members have been requested to submit any recommendations or findings back for the report to be issued in Autumn this year. ▪ Best practice cascaded throughout the organisation from directors to managers to operatives and reverse performance reviews undertaken to obtain feedback ▪ Weekly operations meetings held internally between directors and managers to discuss current issues and address any problems that arise. ▪ Crossway have zero tolerance policy with regard to unsafe working. Everyone in the company is aware of their obligations to their own and others safety. ▪ Method Statements and Risk Assessments are continually checked to ascertain whether they are relevant to the specific task in hand. ▪ Great emphasis is placed on Crossway Managers visiting site teams and engaging with clients site management to ensure smooth planning of workloads.

HOW CAN BAM HELP Early engagement with the subcontractor to discuss upcoming projects either at tender stage or pre contract commencement – more time put in at this stage will ensure more accurate costs. Hold meetings to discuss requirements so thought can be put in and cost plans and draft designs can be produced. Give some visibility going forward as to future projects in the pipeline to allow time for planning workloads and resources.

CROSSWAY CULTURE ▪ Steve Fearnehough was Regional Chairman of NASC from 2008 to 2012 and is still actively involved in attending NASC meetings on a regular basis. ▪ A culture of collaboration and partnering has been very much promoted within the structure of the business as we are all trying to achieve the same goals.  Crossway have an open door policy right through to the Managing Director, our employees are actively encouraged to communicate with the management. Long term employed Foreman Scaffolders and Site Managers who understand the ethos of the company – sub-contractors are never used – all workforce is trained and employed directly. ▪ We are active in consulting the workforce regarding any health and safety issues that may arise both internally and externally. ▪ Independent and un-announced inspections are conducted on random sites on a monthly basis.
