Study Skills Corner #10 Memorization II

The Phonetic System 1 -Tie 2 -Noah 4 -Ear 8 -Ivy 5 -Law 7 -Cow 6 -Shoe 3 -Mow 10 -Toes 9 -Bee

The Phonetic System 1 – tie………………. 6 – shoe 2 – Noah…………….7 – cow 3 – mow………… – ivy 4 – ear……………….9 – bee 5 – law……………..10 – toes

The Phonetic System 1 -Tie 2 -Noah 4 -Ear 8 -Ivy 5 -Law 7 -Cow 6 -Shoe 3 -Mow 10 -Toes 9 -Bee

Basics of Using The Phonetic System Each number from 0 through 9 is represented by a CONSONANT SOUND (something other than a, e, i, o, or u; we also don’t use w, h or y) Ex: 1 is represented by the ‘t’ sound in tie (ta) Could we represent the number one with any other consonant that has the same sound? Yes! How about ‘d’ (da)? Or how about ‘th’? So, the number one is represented by the consonant sounds given by the letters: t, th, or d

Using the Phonetic System The number 2 is represented by the consonant sound like the letter ‘n’ in ‘Noah’. The ‘na’ or ‘no’ sound. The number 3 is represented by the consonant sound like the letter ‘m’ in ‘mow’. The ‘ma’ or ‘mo’ sound. The number 4 is represented by the consonant sound like the letter ‘r’ in Row. The ‘ra’ or ‘ro’ sound. The number 5 is represented by the consonant sound like the letter ‘l’ in Law. The ‘la’ sound. The number 6 is represented by the consonant sounds like the letters ‘j’, ‘sh’ (shoe), ‘ch’, or soft ‘g’. The ‘ja’, ‘cha’, sha’ sound.

Using the Phonetic System The number 7 is represented by the consonant sound like the letter ‘c’ in ‘cow’. The ‘ka’, ‘ca’, hard ‘g’ or ‘q’ sounds. The number 8 is represented by the consonant sound like the letter ‘v’ in ‘ivy’. The ‘va’ or ‘fa’ sound. The number 9 is represented by the consonant sound like the letter ‘b’ in ‘bee’. The ‘ba’ or ‘pa’ sound. The number 0 is represented by the consonant sound like the letter ‘s’ in toes. The ‘sa’, ‘za, or soft ‘c’ sound.

Putting It All Together Let’s think of a word for the number 24, the last date for dropping a course this semester… What is the consonant sound for the number 2? What is the consonant sound for the number 4? Put the na sound together followed by the ra sound, and what words can you come up with? Nero honor inner winner whiner yawner Enron

Putting It All Together Now that we’ve converted an abstract number (24) into something concrete (a word)… We must ASSOCIATE our word with what we are trying to remember (that the 24 th is the last drop date) When we associate something, remember to make it absurd, vivid, colorful, and exaggerated! What associations can you come up with for the word we’ve chosen and the last date for dropping a course?

Reminders About the Phonetic System This will take some effort to remember the sounds associated with the numbers This will take practice to get really good at doing this The applications of this system are virtually UNLIMITED!!! The rewards you reap from learning this system and practicing using it will be out of all proportion to the effort you put into mastering it!
