The War on Terror Essential Question: Why is the US involved in the current conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan? Essential Question: Why is the US involved in the current conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan?

FREEDOM!!! So…we are over in Iraq and Afghanistan to free the people. To give them freedom. Right?

The Truth…? Do we really know the truth? And if we were shown this information how would we respond?

Which is the correct perspective? Us…or them?

Rock, Paper, Scissors Activity [You will have 2 minutes to win as many skittles as you can.]

Capitalism vs. Socialism Classroom Activity: Rock, Paper, Scissors Historical Reference: Capitalism ---Students have their own skittles, and not everyone starts with the same number. As students play the game a few win lots of skittles, but most lose. Individuals privately own industry. Freedom of competition results in unequal economic classes. Socialism ---The teacher collects all skittles and redistributes them equally to all students. Government takes over ownership of industry. Wealth created is distributed equally to all.

Billy Joel has a strong interest in history. "I'm a history nut. I devour history books. At one time I wanted to be a history teacher.“ “I had turned forty. It was 1989 and I said "Okay, what's happened in my life?" I wrote down the year Okay, Harry Truman was president. Popular singer of the day, Doris Day. China went Communist. Another popular singer, Johnnie Ray. Big Broadway show, South Pacific. Journalist, Walter Winchell. Athlete, Joe DiMaggio. Then I went on to It's one of the worst melodies I've ever written. I kind of like the lyrics though.”lyrics

Wait…what? Russians in Afghanistan? 1979

“COLD WAR ” This all began way back in the Post-WWII Era…in the mid-1940’s!!!

Post-WWII Era: The Cold War The Cold War describes the tense and hostile relationship between the Soviet Union and the U.S. between 1945 and The communist government of the Soviet Union wanted to convert other countries to communism. The U.S. pledged to support free countries, or basically any country supporting capitalism, so they could resist communism. Both countries had nuclear weapons and were capable of launching a nuclear war. Other countries took sides in this international conflict. Many Western European countries sided with the U.S. to form NATO (National Atlantic Treaty Organization) in Eastern European countries signed the Warsaw Pact and formed an alliance with the Soviet Union.

A timeline of Cold War events: 1945: Yalta Agreement 1947: Truman Doctrine 1947: Marshal Plan 1948: Berlin Airlift 1949: NATO formed 1950: Korean War begins 1952: US tests 1 st H-bomb in Marshall Islands 1953: Soviet Union tests first H-bomb 1953: Korean War ends 1955: Warsaw Pact organized 1957: Launch of Sputnik 1950s: McCarthy Hearings 1961: Berlin Wall built 1961: Bay of Pigs 1962: Cuban Missile Crisis 1963: Installation of a Hot Line 1969: Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) begins 1979: Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan 1987: Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Treaty 1989: Berlin Wall comes down 1990: Unification of East and West Germany 1991: Collapse of the Soviet Union

1979: Invasion of Afghanistan …… We want the oil! Post WWII – lots of automobiles. We cannot let the Communist Soviets get their hands on it! Where is the oil?

So really…again, why are we over in there? It should be pretty clear by now!

“Support Our Troops” Can citizens support the troops, but protest against the war? Is it not patriotic to exercise one’s freedom of speech, even if it disagrees with others’ beliefs?

“Support Our Troops” Can citizens support the troops, but protest against the war? – Of course we support them. We just question the validity of WHY they are there in the first place. Is it not patriotic to exercise one’s freedom of speech, even if it disagrees with others’ beliefs?

“Support Our Troops” Can citizens support the troops, but protest against the war? – Of course we support them. We just question the validity of WHY they are there in the first place. Is it not patriotic to exercise one’s freedom of speech, even if it disagrees with others’ beliefs? – To me, it IS patriotic to exercise my freedom of speech!!!

“To be continued tomorrow…” Any Questions?

Tomorrow…the truth about terrorism!
