Consider Your Audience Think about what your readers know Use words your readers will understand Include details that will appeal to your readers

Read each sentence, looking for words that give clues about the audience. Explain what the clues tell you about the people who might be reading the information.  One of the most important things to remember about a bike is where the wheels are.  The audience probably does not know a lot about bicycles. 1. If the levers are not compatible with linear pull brakes, be sure to use caliper or canti brakes. 2. Be sure to turn left at the fork in the road, steering clear of the bridge to the right.

Read this sentence from The Wright Brothers: A Flying Start. Then answer the question. “Orville tried other money-making schemes, such as collecting bones for fertilizer plant, gathering old wood and metal for a junkyard, and even putting on a circus.” What does the sentence tell you about the audience for the selection? On lined paper: Suppose you paint pictures. How would you describe what you do to a group of first graders?

Baseball game Uncle Jamie I have played baseball for 4 years. I had an important game recently. How my team performed, whether I enjoyed myself. My friend Timothy hit four home runs. I scored several times.

Topic: Audience: What does the audience already know? What does the audience need to know? What details might interest the audience?

1. How do you know that Uncle Jamie is the audience for the letter? 2. Which line of the letter does not belong? 3. What closing does Franklin use in this letter? 4. What does Uncle Jamie already know about Franklin’s baseball team? 5. Should Franklin include the rules of baseball in this letter? Why or why not?

 Please complete the both sides of this page, then  Begin your draft of your friendly letter.  When you are done, please edit the following sentences: 1. Mike and his mom. Brushed and combed their cat’s fur. 2. Ali sneezed three times. And said thank you.
