ALICE high p T workshop, LBNL, April 7, 2009 (T. Chujo) Organization (as of April 2009) Staff : 6 Y. Miake (Prof.; project leader) S. Esumi (Assoc. Prof. ; physics analysis, simulation) T. Chujo (Assist. Prof. ; design, construction) M. Inaba (Assoc. Prof. ; trigger, readout, electronics) T. Horaguchi (new post-doc) M. Shimomura (new RA) Students : 10+4 D2: K. Watanabe D1: D. Sakata, M. Sano M2: H. Yokoyama, K. Midori, T. Todoroki, E. Hamada, M. Kimura M1: Y. Sekine, T. Takeuchi UG: 4 students. 2

ALICE high p T workshop, LBNL, April 7, 2009 (T. Chujo) Detector assembly, workflow and costs We visited Wayne State Univ. on Dec. 2008, and leaned how to build the modules, strips, and SM from Tom C. and company. We think that it is possible to make modules (and maybe strips) at Tsukuba, if we have stacking stations locally. Current plan: building modules (or strips) at Tsukuba, and ship them to CERN (or Wayne State) for the final SM assembly, then install to ALICE. 3

ALICE high p T workshop, LBNL, April 7, 2009 (T. Chujo) Stacking station Wayne State Univ.) 4 To make one module: 1)< 2 hours for stacking (Pb, Scint) 2)24 hours for compression 3)24 hours for pressure control and monitor. Total: 2.1 days 288 moduels x 2.1 days = 604 days per SM. We need at least 2 or 3 stacking stations, and pressure control/monitoring systems, in order to make modules in the reasonable speed. Detail planning and discussions with Wayne State U. are necessary.

ALICE high p T workshop, LBNL, April 7, 2009 (T. Chujo) Back/front plates, compression plate, support side plates 5 Special parts developed at Wayne Sate. Can be purchased from Wayne State.

ALICE high p T workshop, LBNL, April 7, 2009 (T. Chujo) Lead Absorber Plates/Scint. Plates. 6 Pb plates: Vulcan. Scint: Uniplast, Russia takes 6 months for the new production. need a special cutting (at Wayne state)

ALICE high p T workshop, LBNL, April 7, 2009 (T. Chujo) Fibers, APD, pre-amp., light guide 7 Can be purchased them in Japan WLS fiber: Y11 Si APD: S pre-amp: GN A APD charge sensitive amplifier

ALICE high p T workshop, LBNL, April 7, 2009 (T. Chujo) Costs estimates Budget: Total of ≲ $1 M (USD) in 5 yrs (Grant in Aid, JSPS). 1 ALICE EMCal module (4 towers) $1,327 (USD, w/o assembly labor, APD, pre-amp, Strong back, FEE). 3 SM (= 864 modules) Mechanical: $ 1,327 x 864 = $ 1,146,528 (USD) Readout: ~$50 (APD, preamp) x 4 x 864 = $172,800(USD) FEM (4x864 = 3,456 ch, 26 CHF/ch) : $ 89,856(USD) Total: ~$1.4 M (USD) + Mechanical support + shipping cost. 8

ALICE high p T workshop, LBNL, April 7, 2009 (T. Chujo) Summary on construction We are proposing to build and install the same EMCal on the opposite side of the ALICE-EMCal, to enhance the capability of B-to-B jet physics. Acceptance: 3 SM of ALICE-EMCal (1.0 x 0.7). Modules (or Strips) can be built at Tsukuba, and ship them to CERN (or Wayne State Univ.) for the final SM assembly and installation. Need new support structure for the J-Cal. Start the mass production in Fall/Winter Current target date: installation from summer
