CHAPTER TWO PAGES 22-27

SIR WALTER RALEIGH FOUNDED THE ROANOKE COLONY NO ONE KNOWS WHAT HAPPENED TO THE ROANOKE COLONY. ROANOKE BECAME KNOWN AS THE “LOST COLONY”.

THE COLONY of JAMESTOWN THE FIRST ENGLISH SETTLEMENT IN AMERICA: JAMESTOWN IT IS NOW KNOWN AS VIRGINIA TWO PROBLEMS WITH JAMESTOWN:  LAND WAS SWAMPY  THE LAND WAS POOR JAMESTOWN LOST MANY TO DISEASE AND HUNGER WITH ALL THE PROBLEMS JAMESTOWN STILL BECAME A STRONG COLONY.

LONDON COMPANY AN ENGLISH TRADE COMPANY LONDON COMPANY SENT THE FIRST WOMEN TO THE COLONY

THE FIRST WOMEN WOMEN WERE SENT TO JAMESTOWN BY THE LONDON COMPANY TO START FAMILIES. THIS WAS DONE TO BUILD A STRONG COLONY. BECAUSE OF THIS AMERICA BECAME A HOME OF FAMILIES NOT JUST A LAND OF ADVENTURE.

GOVERNMENT in JAMESTOWN LONDON COMPANY CONTROLLED JAMESTOWN. COLONISTS WERE ALLOWED TO HAVE THEIR SAY IN GOVERNMENT.

PILGRIMS in AMERICA SIGN THE MAYFLOWER COMPACT PILGRIMS SET SAIL FROM ENGLAND ON THE MAYFLOWER MANY PEOPLE ON THE MAYFLOWER WERE SEPARATISTS. THESE PEOPLE WANTED TO SEPARATE FROM THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND. THE MAYFLOWER COMPACT WAS WRITTEN THAT SAID THE LAWS WOULD BE “JUST AND EQUAL”.

PURITANS TRIED TO FORCE EVERYONE IN THEIR COLONY TO FOLLOW THEIR RELIGION. THE PURITANS TREATED THOSE WHO DIDN’T FOLLOW THEIR RELIGION BADLY. ANYONE WHO BROKE CHURCH OR STATE LAWS WAS PUNISHED.

ROGER WILLIAMS and ANNE HUTCHINSON WILLIAMS BELIEVED THAT THE NATIVES SHOULD BE PAID FOR THEIR LAND. WILLIAMS BELIEVED THAT PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHT TO WORSHIP AS THEY PLEASE. PURITAN LEADERS ARRESTED WILLIAMS HE WAS ARRESTED AND FOUND GUILTY OF “SPREADING NEW AND DANGEROUS IDEAS”. WILLIAMS STARTED A NEW COLONY CALLED RHODE ISLAND.

ANNE HUTCHINSON BELIEVED THAT LIVING A HOLY LIFE WAS MORE IMPORTANT THAN TO OBEY CHURCH LAWS. SHE WAS ORDERED BY THE PURITANS TO STAY AWAY FROM MASSACHUSETTS FOREVER. THE NATIVE AMERICANS KILLED HER IN FEAR OF LOOSING THEIR LAND. THEY ALSO KILLED MANY OF HER 14 CHILDREN.
