Unit 2 Lesson 4 The First Colonies Vocabularies Colony-is a settlement or region ruled by another country Slavery-is the noun for slave. Is the practice of holding people against their will and making them work without pay. Borderlands- land that separates more than one geographic region. Presidio- is a military fort. Mission- an assignment or purpose. Cash crop- is an open compound word, a crop that people grow to sell  

New Spain pg. 66 *Spain founded the colony of New Spain in 1535. *New Spain is present day Mexico *Islands is the Caribbean Sea *Lands in Central America *1550 more than 100,000 Spanish colonists *Many colonists started gold and silver mines, large ranches and farms *American Indians became slaves *They later brought Africans to the Americas to become slaves

The Borderlands *The land that were borderlands of New Spain were Florida, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California *Spanish soldiers build presidios in the borderlands St. Augustine and Santa Fe pg. 67 *Pedro Menendez de Aviles and others settle in St. *Augustine, Florida and build the first settlement in 1565 *1610 Spanish missionaries settled in Santa Fe and built religious settlements *American Indians were forced to work on mission farms and ranches *Many Americans began to tear down churches and other mission farms. *The Spanish brought animals which changed the lives of the Indians *American Indians tamed the wild horses and used them in wars and farming

Early English colonies Pg. 68 England first colony was on Roanoke Island in North Carolina but it failed in 1585 The Virginia Colony *England founded Jamestown in Virginia in 1607 *James Smith the leader made a rule, that anyone who did not work did not eat. *The colonist in Virginia began to grow cash crop (tobacco) *By 1619 there were more than 1,000 people in Jamestown *The colony set up the House of Burgesses to make laws. *House of Burgesses was the first legislature (lawmaking body) in North America.

The Plymouth Colony pg. 69 *Pilgrims came from England to build a community where they can follow their own religious beliefs *1620 the Pilgrims left England on the Mayflower They land in New England and founded a colony called Plymouth *On the Mayflower, the men drew up a compact called the Mayflower Compact giving the colonist the right to govern themselves. *The Pilgrims and Indians became friends and the *Indians showed the Pilgrims how to fish and plant. *More English colonist came and the two groups began to fight over the land and resources.

New France pg 70 *In 1608, Samuel de Champlain founded Quebec along the St. Lawrence River in what is now Canada. *Quebec was the first French settlement in North America. *1630s French missionaries arrived and lived with the American Indians and learned their languages and ways of life. *Fur trader spread west of the St Lawrence River and built trading posts. *Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet explored parts of the Mississippi River. *1682 Sieur de la Salle traveled the mouth of the Mississippi River and claimed the Mississippi River valley for France *He named the land Louisiana in honor of King Louis XIV. *1722 New Orleans became Louisiana’s capital

New Netherland pg. 71 *1600 Dutch began a colony *They settled in New York, New Jersey *Dutch thought they had brought the land from the *American Indians and the Indians said the land was for all people. *American Indians thought the Dutch were paying to use the land. *1662 they had settlement in New Amsterdam (next to Hudson River to sail for fur trade)
