Bell Ringer Which colony was founded for the purpose of profit? A. Maryland B. Virginia C. Delaware D. New York

Vocabulary Mayflower Compact: First governing document of Plymouth Colony. Signed by male passengers of the Mayflower. House of Burgesses: First legislative assembly of elected representatives in North America. Established by the Virginia Company. Salutary Neglect: British policy of avoiding strict enforcement of parliamentary laws, meant to keep the American colonies obedient to England. Proclamation of 1763: Issued by King George II. Purpose of the proclamation was to organize Great Britain's new North American empire and stabilize relations with Natives through regulation of trade, settlement, and land purchases on western frontier.

Why leave your own country? Push Factors: Motivation to leave Religious Persecution Lack of arable lands Lack of economic opportunity Political Upheaval Overcrowding (No land ownership) Pull Factors: Motivation to come Political Freedom Religious Freedom Economic Opportunity Land Ownership

Immigrants You are to imagine that you are an Immigrant that has decided their home country with others. You need to decide which pull factor caused you to leave, find the sign in the room and decide how you will govern yourselves within that group. You will then present your new government to the class along with at least 5 laws that are crucial for your survival. Who will be in charge How will laws be created Who will make sure laws are followed etc.

The Mayflower Compact (1620) First form of government in the New World Written in the Cabin of the Mayflower Established because the Colonists landed in Cape Cod, Mass. Instead of Northern VA. Established rule by “The General Will” of the People.

The Virginia House of Burgesses (1643) Burgesses = Representatives Representative body that governed the Colony of VA Became the “lower house” (Today’s House of Representatives) Representative government comes from Enlightenment philosophers Idea that citizens must actively participate in government and elect proper representatives

Proclamation of 1763: Beginning of British Interference Colonists and Native Americans had disputed territory since the first Pilgrims Great Britain felt that the Indian Wars (Especially the French and Indian War) had become too expensive and forbade Colonies from expanding. Great Britain wanted to expand fur trade and taxes were put in place to pay for military protection of Colonies

Exit Slip Describe the impacts of early forms of Colonial Government: The Mayflower Compact The Virginia House of Burgesses The Proclamation of 1763
