Sukhothai is at the southern-most part of northern Thailand. It is about 440 kilometers from Bangkok by bus, about 487 kilometers by train and about 378 kilometers from Muang Sukhothai. The area covers 6, square kilometers. It occupies 7.2% of the central region or 1.3% of the country area Sukhothai is considerd to be nort-central Thailand basrd on the physical features. It is parallel to Phitsanulok,Kamphaengphet,Phichit,Petchabun and Namphaegphet,Phichit,Petchabun and Nakhon Sawan.According to the administration by the government,Sukhothai is also in the lower northern region as Phitsanulok,Kamphaengphet,Phiachit,Petchabun,Nakhon Sawan,Uthaithani and Uttradit.

Although the holiday of Loi Krathong is now celebrated throughout the kingdom, Loy Krathong originated in Sukhothai, the first Thai capital. While particularly popular with couples who head down to any nearby body of water to light the candles and incense on their floating Krathongs, visitors can best appreciate Loi Krathong by heading to the ancient capital of Sukhothai, where the holiday was first celebrated. Highlights of the Sukhothai Loi Krathong celebration include displays of lighted candles and fireworks, folk dancing and a spectacular light & sound presentation. At the Sukhothai Loi Krathong festival, visitors will be dazzled by the float procession of large krathong from 17 Northern provinces. The procession will consist of krathongs from government agencies, state enterprises, private sectors, and the general public. There are also a Krathong design contest, the Miss Noppamas Beauty Contest, and Sukhothai arts and culture performances.

An annual celebration of the Thai New Year is held during 12– 13 April at Si Satchanalai Historical Park, Amphoe Si Satchanalai; this festival carries forward Sukhothai’s tradition. It was mentioned in the famous stone inscription “The Sukhothai people are generous, abide by precepts, and always give charity”, which is believed to be inscribed during the reign of King Ramkhamhaeng the Great of the Sukhothai Kingdom. The highlights of the event include the elephant procession, offering rituals to pay respect to Phra Suea Mueang, the tutelary spirit and kings from the Phra Ruang Dynasty, Miss Songkran beauty queen contest, local sport competitions, and cultural performances.

This is organized annually during 18 – 19 April at the plaza of Chaopho Mueang Dong Monument, Tambon Ban Tuek, Amphoe Si Satchanalai. The ceremony is held to honour “Muen Nakhon” or “Chaopho Mueang Dong”, the establisher of Dong City. He was talented and courageous, as well as specialized in catching elephants and utilising them in war. Later, he was executed to prove his loyalty to King Tilokkarat. Then, the villagers organized a ceremony to pay homage to Chaopho Mueang Dong by preparing a more-than-50-elephant parade wonderfully decorated, passing the village to pay respect to the shrine of Chaopho Khao Mung and onward to the plaza of Chaopho Mueang Dong Monument to pay homage to Chaopho Mueang Dong.
