Green for Energy Where are we coming from... I.S.I.S.S. “Giuseppe Verdi” – Valdobbiadene (TV) - ITALY

...a glance at the past Since 2005 our school has developed its own expertise in using and saving energy in relationship with the environment. In 2007 the Department of Technology decided to introduce a period of practical experience in the traditional lesson plans: a team of students (selected by teachers) are given the opportunity to analyse some real problems in a real working contest. Very often the “real problem” is about energy.

In 2008 the 4A ITIS class, while studying the consumption of energy in a local winery, they found a way to save energy: the heating produced by the condensers of a chiller, used for refrigerating must (“mosto”) could be used to pre-heat water, used in the cleaning process.

This project won the first award in a National Competition, promoted by ENEL (2.000 € for each student!) ENEL invited the class to Rome for the concluding ceremony...

… and to Strasburgh, to present the project in Parliament.

In 2009 we studied energy consumption in a public building: the middle school in Valdobbiadene. It was our first experience with a public partner: the Valdobbiadene middle school and the Municipality of Valdobbiadene

This project received a Special Mention in the National Competition promoted by ENEA, as well as € for our school and a educational fotovoltaic panel.

was also a year of Government activities: –The Ministry of Environment issued some guidelines, the so-called EASS (Educazione Ambientale e allo Sviluppo Sostenibile); –The Ministry of Economy issued guidelines for the Energy Performance of Buildings.

That is why in we began long, complex study on Sustainability in Valdobbiadene: we collected data describing home energy consumption, local mobility, energy saving, renewable sources, etc... We also checked the level reached (in our city) as far as the target is concerned. We are still using these results in a project of “peer education” between our students and students of the middle schools in the local area every year.

From November 2010 to June 2011, two students in their final year developed an environmental analysis in a winery: Bortolomiol S.p.A. All their results were the core of a short thesis they discussed at their final exam and which we will see during our visit to the winery.

2011 – 2S2C 2S2C = Studenti e Scuole Costruttori di Cittadinanza The aim of this project was to promote existing best practices in the high schools of Treviso (not only in energy matter) with financial aid. ISISS “Giuseppe Verdi” got one of these aids. We took advantage of this for studying energy consumption in our school and getting the Energy Performance Certificate of our school as a building.

The results HEATING: - consumption 232˙610 kWh - CO 2 emissions 40˙242 kg - methane 24˙248 Sm 3 EPI: 15,3 kWh/m 3 CLASS: C/D GLOBAL CONSUMPTION395˙000 kWh GLOBAL CO 2 EMISSIONS 54˙600 kg ELECTRICITY: - consumption 64˙569 kWh - CO 2 emissions30˙347 kg

In 2011 we began a two-year Comenius Project with other European schools; the subject is: Sustainability. Students are discovering that Green Economy is developing all over Europe.

All the results we collected in the energy and environmental analysis completed in 2010 are now shared with the corresponding results of other Countries: Germany, France, Austria, Denmark.
