Laptop Ensembles Laptop Ensembles are a growing phenomenon (some notable orchestras already exist in Princeton, Moscow, Tokyo, Berlin or Stanford). Traditional instruments are replaced by laptop computers or meta-instruments (laptop complemented with speakers, actuators, sensors and controllers). The members are not only performers but sound designers, researchers and composers as well, in a collaborative, multi-role environment. The major challenges a laptop ensemble must face come primarily from the lack of gestuality.
The ESMUC Laptop Orchestra An open collective, currently formed by Students and teachers from the ESMUC Sonology Department Researchers at the Music Technology Group (UPF University) Anyone willing to contribute to the project Their performances are halfway between a demo concert and a sonic installation, and deeply focused on technical challenges, like Real-time audio&video manipulation with custom interfaces Wireless networked laptops playing live-coded streams in sync The Esmuc Laptop Orchestra is open to collaborations for live, networked performances and to perform commissioned compositions.
