Leonarda N. Camacho Executive Vice President Metro Manila Linis Ganda, Inc. LINIS GANDA: 19 Years After (Looking Ahead)

After 19 years... Linis Ganda’s garbage segregation idea has persuaded 400,000 Households Schools Offices

“Whenever a new idea pops into our midst, upsetting digestions, unready to absorb its value to human betterment, I remember Copernicus and Galileo who had the temerity to declare that the earth revolved around the sun and not vice versa.” - Sylvia L. Mayuga

Will it take centuries before everyone segregates their garbage in the kitchen? NO.

Garbage Segregation is the solution to the garbage problem. Massive Information Campaign

Garbage and the Underground Economy The Metro Manila Federation of Environment Cooperatives annually contributes to the underground economy Junk shops and eco-aides are pioneers in economic change and promising new jobs As of 2001, Linis Ganda has collected 120, tons = P157,188,155.00

Garbage Segregation 1975: Barangay Highway Hills (Mandaluyong) 1978: Metro Manila (but progress ended) 1983: Metro Manila (thrives to this day)

Solid Waste Management Law The creation of the National Commission on Solid Waste Management The creation of a solid waste council in all the cities and municipalities The mandatory segregation of garbage at the source and the mandatory collection by local units The phase-out of unrecyclable packaging such as polystyrene, doy pack and tetrapack

Mandatory Segregation in three (3) containers: Organic wastes Recyclable materials - paper - plastic, etc. Residuals - sanitary napkins and diapers - shoes and slippers - rags - polystyrene/styrofoam - tetrapack - doy pack - ball and pentel pens - flashlight, etc.

Rubber Tires Three (3) rubber tire manufacturers = 3M tires/year Smuggled tires= 1M tires/year M tires/year 1992: Linis Ganda commissioned the Department of Science and Technology to build a model tire shredder

Hospital Wastes Hospital wastes require more careful disposal Everything done in strict conditions sealed containers sealed hard plastics sealed truck A hydro mix machine can detoxify the toxic wastes and convert them into hollow blocks The plant is also sealed in iron for safety in cases of floods and earthquakes Workers are likewise protected

Industrial Wastes The Philippine Business for the Environment Runs an industrial waste exchange program Assists industries to exchange industrial wastes Preventing industrial garbage: - metallic sludge - used oil - chemicals - solvents - acidic and alkali wastes, etc.

Resource Recovery The Solid Waste Management Law A resource recovery program Garbage = Natural Resources: paper from trees plastics from oil glass from silica metals from iron ore

LINIS GANDA is all about Eco-Economy. You want the country to prosper? You want economic growth? Then separate your garbage in the kitchen.

Thank you and good day.
