Jane Goodall By: Sam Goodall and Eric Fraser

Biography  APRIL 3 RD 1934 London, England  Always interested in the behaviour of animals  Graduated from high school in 1952  After graduating worked as a secretary at Oxford University  1956 Jane worked at a London film company at the age of 22  Invited by a childhood friend to live in Africa with her family she began almost immediately saving money as it was her dream to travel there and study animals  1957 aged 23 Jane docked in Mombasa, Africa and soon found her self to be the assistant to the well known Louis Leakey  She was chosen despite having no college degree

Date of Study & School of thought  1960 at the age of 26 she was fully immersed into the world of chimpanzees’ which in 1960 there was very little known about  Jane began by observing the chimps behaviours in the Gombe stream reserve along Lake Tanganyika (now Tanzania) with a note pad and a pair of binoculars  She began to concern herself with Physical Anthropology

Basis of Research And her methods  Jane’s basis of research came when she found that chimps were manufacturing tools from reeds and branches, even stone. Jane wondered if humans were the first to use this kind of thinking.  Jane’s methods of research were through observation and when it came to the “Banana Club” she used interaction  Banana Club was a systematic way of feeding the chimps bananas everyday in order to gain their trust, affection, and respect

Discoveries - recap -  Chimpanzees are carnivorous  Observed higher level intelligence and planning  Male chimps also showed elements of strategic dominance  Warring between two gangs of chimps lasted 4 years  They also were seen practicing monogamy ( one mate for life )  Compassion was shown for a child with out a mother  They also tend to teach each other skills such as hunting and crafting  Chimpanzees deliberately eat medicinal plants to help with body pains

Criticism Jane Goodall faced lots of criticism because she happened to be a woman alone in the jungle Although finishing high school Jane never attended a college this caused a fair bit of backlash from the academic community
