Rights Respecting Schools Thursday 22 nd January

The world is big and it has a lot of people living in it.

UNICEF is a charity. It helps children in different parts of the world.

We are lucky! We have great staff and a fantastic new school. We have clean water. We have lots of food. We have somewhere to live and a bed to sleep in each night. Not every child in the world has this.

Some children don't have clean water or a meal each day Some children cannot go to school because they have to work from a very young age Others may be living in danger because of war or poverty Some children do not have a safe place to live Others become ill and their parents do not have enough money to make them better Even in this country some children do not have very happy lives. Many children in other countries don't have access to the things we take for granted.

UNICEF - United Nations Children's Fund helps children around the world by following the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. This is a list of all the different things that every child around the world needs and should have in order to live a happy and healthy life. How does UNICEF help them?

What rights should everyone in our school have? 1.Safety 2.Work 3.Respect.

THE UN CONVENTION ON THE RIGHTS OF THE CHIILD The right to a childhood (including protection from harm); The right to be educated (including all girls and boys completing primary school); The right to be healthy (including having clean water, nutritious food and medical care); The right to be treated fairly (which includes changing laws and practices that discriminate against children); The right to be heard (which includes considering children’s views).

What are we going to do? We want to create a Rights Respecting School group. How are we going to do it? We are going to work towards the Rights Respecting Schools Award

When? Application forms for P4-7 back to Miss Hutchison or me by next Wednesday – 2 pupils per class. Names of P1-3 to Miss Hutchison or me by next Wednesday – 1 pupil per class. Rights Respecting Group members announced at Friday Assembly. First job?
