WARM UP:  Write your homework – leave it to be stamped!  Update Table of Contents  Get your notes out from last class & discuss the following with your table partner:  What is a row on the periodic table called?  What is a column on the periodic table called?  What information can you get from knowing which row or column an element is in? DateSession # ActivityPage # 9/10- 9/11 7 Scavenger Hunt Review (handwritten) 16 Bohr Diagrams Vs. Lewis Dot Diagrams (handwritten) 17 Helpful Hints Study Guide18

REVIEW: Last time I gave you 2 “shortcuts” for the Periodic Table…what were they?  What information will the period (row) give you?  What information will the group (column) give you? HINT:

Scavenger Hunt Review  Number 1-20 on page 16 of your notebook  There are 20 test questions on note cards hidden in the room, and as you find them you must write the answer next to the correct question number.  They ARE NOT hidden anywhere in my desk area, the glass cabinets, or behind anything that is glued, taped or stapled down.

Question 1  What are the 3 subatomic particles that make up an atom AND what is the charge of each?

Question 2  The atomic mass of an atom is made up of which 2 subatomic particles added together?

Question 3  Give the location of each in an atom: - Proton - Neutron - Electron

Question 4  The atomic number of an element also tells you which other information about a neutral atom?

Question 5  What happens when you change the number of electrons in an atom?

Question 6  Carbon-12 and Carbon-14 are both the element carbon, so what is the difference between them?

Question 7  Isotopes are versions of the same element with a different number of __________________.

Question 8  If you start with the element Oxygen and add a proton to it, which element would it become?

Question 9  If a Calcium atom loses 2 electrons then it will become a(n) ___________ with a charge of ________.

Question 10  If Sulfur gains 3 electrons then it will become a negative _________ with _____ total electrons.

Question 11  What are the 3 main sections, or “Kingdoms” on the Periodic Table?

Question 12  Which group on the Periodic Table is the MOST reactive?  Why?

Question 13  Which group on the Periodic Table are good conductors and are commonly used for things like tools, coins or jewelry?

Question 14  How many valence electrons does Francium (Fr) have?  How do you know?

Question 15  Which other group would the elements in group 1 most likely bond with and WHY?

Question 16  What is a row on the Periodic Table called?

Question 17  What is a column on the Periodic Table called?

Question 18  Why are elements organized into the group/family they are in?

Question 19  An element like Silicon can act like a metal or a non- metal, so in which section of the Periodic Table would you find it?

Question 20  Which group on the Periodic Table is inert?

Bohr Diagrams VS. Lewis Dot Diagrams: Bohr Diagram Lewis Dot  Shows ALL electrons  Draw electron shells  Shows ONLY valence electrons  Do NOT draw any shells O How do you find the number of valence electrons? How do you find the total number of electrons?

Helpful Hints Study Guide  Complete the Helpful Hints Study Guide for homework…I will be checking it for a homework grade NEXT CLASS!  Be sure to study ALL of your class notes and activities…test questions will come from all of them!  Helpful website for review:

RAFT Time  RAFT Requirements: Each group has a grading rubric to remind you of the requirements, make sure you follow it!  Your RAFT must be clearly stated and will be visible/consistent through out the details of the project!  The information included in your RAFT must be accurate!  Your work must be of high quality!  Must be related to a chemistry concept we have covered…but you can certainly exceed the depth/detail we covered in class!  It must be an appropriate amount of work for the number of people in your group!

WARM UP:  Write your homework – leave it to be stamped!  Update Table of Contents for today!  Get the “Identifying Unknown Elements” Warm-Up off the front counter and complete it!  Get your Helpful Hints Study Guide out to be checked! DateSession # ActivityPage # 9/14- 9/15 8 Identifying Unknown Elements 19

Sections Vs. Groups  What are the 3 main sections of the Periodic Table?  Those 3 main sections are broken down even further into specific groups…when we say group, what are we referring to?  What are some examples of these groups?

WARM UP:  NO HOMEWORK! Write it – have it stamped!  Make sure your RAFT assignment is turned in to the basket or submitted electronically by the end of the day!  Update Table of Contents for today’s session even though there is nothing to tape in  Study with those around you…be sure to have any questions ready! BOOM REVIEW GAME HOW TO PLAY:  Janay and Creston are partners. Take all of the cards out of the bag and put them in a pile upside down.  Janay picks a card (without looking at it) and slides it to Creston. He asks her the question. If she gets the question right, she keeps the card. If she gets the question wrong, the card goes back in the pile.  If Janay picks a BOOM card, all of her cards go back in the pile.  Janay answers questions until she gets one wrong, or picks a BOOM card then it is Creston’s turn to pick a card and answer a question.  The person with the most cards when time is up wins!

FOR THE TEST  Clear your desk except for your pencil & a calculator if you want one.  Make sure all textbooks are closed.  Stand the manila folders between you and your table partner.  Please write your name on the test as soon as you get it.  Any last questions???

AFTER THE TEST  Put your tests in the basket!  Pick up graded work from the side counter if you want it back.  Complete any missing assignments you may have…remember a 70 is better than a 0.  Put finishing touches on RAFT – submit it!  Work on the Periodic Table riddles for 5 bonus points per COMPLETED & CORRECT side…those points might come in handy if you have late work!
