Writing Two-Step Inequalities

Warm Up Write an inequality to match each given scenario. Each ticket costs more than $12.00 The car repair will be $500.00 or less An order of 8 computers costs less than $1200.00

An inequality may contain any of these symbols: <, >, ≤, or ≥. It is important to determine which inequality symbol best fits the problem situation when writing an inequality. The unknown information in an inequality is represented by a variable. The known amounts in an inequality are represented by constants.

Katrina wrote the following problems for the given inequalities Katrina wrote the following problems for the given inequalities. What changes would you make to her problems?

Trevor is writing a paper that must be at least 50,000 words long Trevor is writing a paper that must be at least 50,000 words long. He has already written 23,210 words. Write an inequality to find the average number of words Trevor must write per week if he wants to finish the paper in the next 5 weeks.

Write a corresponding real-world problem to represent 150 - 4x ≥ 20

Cheryl is thinking of three consecutive numbers whose average is less than or equal to half of the smallest number. Write an inequality that Cheryl could use to identify the smallest of the three numbers.

Exit Ticket 1. Draw algebra tiles to model 5t - 6 ≥ 2. 2. Connie’s dog Fido weighs 35 pounds. Her vet placed Fido on a diet. What inequality can you write to find the average number of pounds Fido must lose monthly to reach a healthier weight of 28 pounds within 6 months? 3. Jerome spent $20 on supplies to make 50 cookies for a bake sale. What inequality can you write to find the price Jerome should charge for each cookie if he wants to have a profit of more than $60? 4. Write a real-world problem for the inequality 8 - 2x ≤ 5.
