Presentation transcript:

Pears transparent soap is a brand of soap first produced and sold in 1807 by Andrew pears at a factory just off oxford street in London England. It was the world's first mass-market transparent soap. Other soaps at the time has lead and arsenic In it witch is poisonous. It made people Skin hurt. On the other hand pear soap was Gentle and kind to your skin.

Pears began to experiment with soap purification and eventually managed to produce a gentle soap based on glycerine and other natural products. The clarity of the soap gave it a novel transparent appearance which provided a marketing advantage. To add to the appeal, Pears gave the soap an aroma reminiscent of an English garden.

I find this pear advert shocking because the Images are racist. At the time it was fine and quite Normal to use images like this in soap adverts Like this one by fairy soap

From the late 19th century, Pears soap was famous for its marketing. Its campaign using Millais's painting Bubbles continued over many decades. As with many other brands at the time, at the beginning of the 20th century Pears also used their product as a sign of the prevailing European concept of the "civilizing mission" of empire and trade, in which the soap stands for progress.

Lillie Langtry's famous ivory complexion brought her income as the first woman to endorse a commercial product, advertising Pears Soap. Her fee was allied to her weight so she was paid 'pound for pound'.

Here is a range of pear ads through the ages

Here are some packaging from today as you can see pear soap comes in different colours. The blue one has mint in it and the green one is good for oily skin. The transparent quality is still very important.
