Direct and Indirect Objects Adapted by Linda Neuman

Direct Object: a noun or pronoun that receives the action of a verb, or shows the result of the action answers the question "What?" or "Whom?" after an action verb Shannon plays baseball. Baseball is the direct object of the verb “plays” (plays what?)

Indirect Object only appears in sentences that already have a direct object answers the question “to whom?” or “for whom?” He gave her roses. Her is the indirect object of the verb gave (gave to whom?)

Direct Objects can also be clauses “That” clause He thought that he had a perfect alibi. Nominal relative clause The officer described what he saw through the keyhole.

Indirect Objects can be phrases Liam showed the boy in the green shirt how to play the game. She told her frail, aging grandfather the truth about that night.

Indirect objects can also be found in prepositional phrases I didn't have enough money for a sandwich, so George bought me it. I didn't have enough money for a sandwich, so George bought it for me. After Jake took a huge helping of pie, he passed us it. After Jake took a huge helping of pie, he passed it to us. Repositioning an indirect object in a sentence helps the sentence read better, especially if the indirect object is a pronoun. The indirect object in this case is called the object of the preposition.

Look for the direct and indirect objects in these sentences. The teacher gave the students their test papers. Tyler's mom made him a chocolate cake for his birthday. I was furious because Mandy told Jessica my secret. Are you going to give Chelsea the good news?
